Rolling Stone top 100 Guitarists

So you're amazed as to how Dave's rhythm guitar slaps and strums so "perfectly"...but you can't. Ask all things about Dave and his guitars here.

jkanter wrote:I mean that list is a farce anyway....DAVID GILMOUR(FLOYD) AS #82!!!!!!

DEREK TRUCKS AS #81!!!!!!

TREY AS #73!!!!!

SANTANA AS #15!!!! BECK HIGHER THAN ALL THOSE AT #14!!?!?!!?!?!?!?!?

But I will say this......every single one of thsoe top 7 deserve to be there. Ok, you can make an arguement that Page should be there...maybe Santana or Garcia.......but that top 7 is just unreal.

I can only imagine what a jam session between those guys would be like.......ha, kinda like the ending to Layla(w/ Clapton and Duane).......x10000000

I had to edit and put one more thing in there............it goes back to that David Gilmour....Dude..the fucking musical genious behind Pink Floyd...PINK FLOYD!!!!! POSSIBLY, AND ARGUABLY, THE GREATEST, MOST UNIQUE, BAND IN HISTORY OF MUSIC......THEIR MAIN MUSICIAN...THE MUSICAL GENIOUS DRIVING THEM.....AT #82!!!! I know what you'll all say....there is no doubt that Floyd wouldn't have been Floyd w/o Roger Waters...but he was the LYRICAL genious behind them....Floyd wouldn't have been the SAME Floyd w/o Gilmour in there...he was the MUSIC MAN. He often played bass on their albums which was Water's instrument live.

Edit #2 will have me ranting about Derek Trucks. HAS RS EVEN EVER SEEN HIM PLAY?!!?!!?!?! I hardly believe anyone that puts fucking Britney Spears on their cover....would be going out to listen to Derek Trucks play guitar. If they did, it was probably from an Allman Brother concert where he wouldn't have stood out and they didn't know him and they kept on saying, where is that unreal, amazing, mesmorizing, stupendous, eclectic slide guitar coming from1?!?!?1?!?!?! Then they just go assume it was a recording of a dead Duane Allman and they go on smoking their crack as they write about some guy they heard abotu once to put him as #81 on all time greatest guitarists even though he is better than about 60 of everyone else

I mean COME ON....sorry, shit like that PISSES ME OFF

Neither is re-inventing the wheel. I'd say for overall chops John Mayers, but for style and nuance Dave Matthews.

charliemike wrote:BTW, with all due respect, I think Syd Barrett was the creative force behind Pink Floyd. When they ran out of ways to express their sadness about his descent into schizophrenia, the band foundered and Waters left.

But in terms of the band's dynamics, I think Waters was as influential (if not more so) as Glimour, whom I really like.
I would have to agree w/ everything you said except for one thing. I don't think that Syd Barrett was so much the creative force behind Pink Floyd...more of the inspiration for the music created. Their albums are clearly about their deranged little friend over there in England...BUT he was not a part of their musical/lyrical superiourness(is that a word?!??!).

I would also have to agree that Waters may have been more INFLUENTIAL in terms of inspiring people...but you also have to think what went around those amazing lyrics. Anyone's lyrics can come out good...but when you get the type of music to fit EXACTLY what that person is trying to say...in the way that Floyd did...it can't be just about one area.

Bottom line...Floyd wouldn't have been Floyd w/o EITHER Waters OR Gilmour. I would have to put Pink Floyd as my favorite band of all time so I may be a little biased. You may say....more than DMB?!?!?!! Well, I think that what Floyd managed to do...at that time was beyond amazing. Also considering the fact that NO ONE can come close to their sound is really an acomplishment unto itself. DMB is right there...probably even w/ Floyd as my fav band....if only because of the influence it has had on my life.......but I have at times gotten a little tired of listening to DMB.....has NEVER happened w/ Floyd.

ya seriously, where the fuck is avril lavigne?

Kantar, I can't believe you don't think beck should be that high on the list. Forget for a second who they put below him, if they had changed it around and put people from floyd and carlos santana above him, would you still be pissed? Beck has some reDICULOUS talent on the guitar.

I'll be honest...I have never listened to Beck so I can't really give an unbiased opinion on that. As for him being on the list...I do know that he is a VERY good guitarist and he has managed to influence many people so I'm not really mad he's on the list at all. What pisses me off is who is below him.

So I guess the answer to your question is that I would NOT be pissed if people like Gilmour, Santana, Trucks were ahead of him because I just think that they are better guitarists. Now as I said I don't know Beck...but those 3 guys are very close to GODS when it come to the guitar so it's hard to think someone like Beck is better.

so i figured i'd try to write RS and see how they come up with the list, this is what i got as a response:

The list is compiled by polling music industry professionals, experienced writers for Rolling Stone and distinguished guitarists themselves.

Yeah, I believe that as well. The additions of Jack [White] and Kurt actually made me laugh. Where's Kottke, Dykes...Emmanual?! I might have missed it, but I didn't even see Chet on there. What bullshit.

Damnit! Jack White?! What the fuck, mate. What the fuck. Even I'm better than quite a few people on that list, and I know what people write is often different than what they could play, but you can still tell.

More like naming the first 100 guitarists that pop into their heads, putting all the names in a horse's ass, then putting them in a list relative to the order they came out.

Yeah, he's pretty damn awesome too.

Tim Reynolds does not deserve to be on the list. There are people much better than Tim and dont get the credit he does and there are people on that list that Tim is better than. To Rollingstone he is just another Joe Smoe who can play guitar.

And for Jack White. I was reading this post at school and the kid next to me was listening The White Stripes. And i have to say it was creative so he does deserve it. Maybe not as high as he was but deserving.
Matilda: I was the fat girl growing up.

Derek: Ew!
