different ways to play songs

So you're amazed as to how Dave's rhythm guitar slaps and strums so "perfectly"...but you can't. Ask all things about Dave and his guitars here.

Unread post by STLflmmkr » Sun Oct 31, 2004 1:38 am

hey guys im new here and this is my first post

but i was looking around the internet and it amazes me how many different ways people play songs

i play BOWA almost the same way as on this site the chorus is the only thing i play different is there a way to insert an audio clip i have a clip of what it sounds like and wanted to put it in but couldnt figure it out
also this site has helped me out ALOT in the past thanks for the videos :)

just wondering if you play any song differently
BOWA CHORUS

I ------------------------------------I
I ---------------5---5---5---5---5-I
I.-6---6---6----6---6---6---6---6-I
I.-7---7---7----6---6---6---6---6-I
I -7---7---7----4---4---4---4---4-I
I -5---5---5--------x---------------I

I -------------------------------------I
I -2---2---2---5---5---5---5---0--I
I -2---2---2---6---6---6---6---0--I
I -4---4---4---6---6---6---6---0--I
I --------------4---4---4---4-------I
I --------------0---x---0---0-------I

I -5---5---5-----------------------------I
I -3---3---3---2---2---2---2---2---2--I
I -0---0---0---2---2---2---2---2---2--I
I -4---4---4---2---2---2---2---2---2--I
I -5---5---5---0---0---0---0---0---0--I
I ----------x-------x------------------------I

LET RING time signature for last measure is 2/4
I---------------------------- I
I--0---0---0-------0---0--- I
I--4---4---4-------4---4---.I
I--2---2---2-------2---2----.I
I--2------------------------- I
I--0------------4----------- I

notes. 1.THE CHORDS THAT ARE SMALLER ARE GHOST NOTES YOU DONT PLAY THEM
2. THE LAST MEASURE HAS A TIME SIGNATURE CHANGE TO 2/4 INSTEAD OF 4/4 AND LET IT RING
3. THE CHORDS WITH THE X'S ARE GHOST NOTES YOU DONT PLAY THEM
4. YOU PLAY THIS TWICE
5. IT TAKES SOME PRACTICE TO GET THE LAST MEASURE DOWN BUT YOU NEED TO MAKE SURE THAT YOU GO FROM THE LAST --240- CHORD TO THE FIRST 5776-- CHORD QUICKLY

I dont know if this counts but i switched to playing the main verses to tripping billies using regular cords and i think its easier to play and sounds more full and better overall

I play the chorus to #41, most of Gravedigger, Stay or Leave, and Where are You Going a bit differently than dave. But it sounds almost exactly the same.

The reason you get so many different tabs out there is because most people who post on those sites arent good enough yet to write tabs by ear or by videos. So most of the time they are wrong. I dont trust many tab sites. This one is the only one that is almost 100% accurate. I tab most stuff myself now and just check it on this site to make sure I didnt make any big mistakes. But many tabs out there are so inaccurate I wonder how dum the person must be to have posted it when it sounds nothing like the song.

I use someone open chords on Trippin Billies when playing it solo and I think it sounds better. I also play the BOWA chorus differently, I like to put a spin on things instead of playing things EXACTLY like Davey.

I couldn't agree more! Learn the song, but make it your own.
Quite often I'll play Dave chords and jams in totally a different context
when jamming with other musicians, and it works with different rhythms,
and instrumentation. It's all about exploration and playing music, not being a robot. I slow down the intro to Jimi and play it rather bluesy for a bit before jumping into the Known riff, it's all the same notes, with some blues licks thrown in, you wouldn't even know it was Jimi. But it works.
I've never had anyone in a bar come up to me and say "man, you played Tripping Billies wrong". It's getting music and emotion across that counts.

That's the spirit! Try jamming Dave progressions in different contexts.
Jam with some drum loops, change the key, rhythm. Your vocabulary will quickly start to expand, even though your playing the same chords
as Minarets, or Warehouse.................Oh and have lots of fun! :D
