Vocal Help

Does anyone have any tips on how to make my singing voice better, I am really frustrated of not being able to sing while I play things on the guitar....thanks

It's a tough subject for advice, I think the best thing to do is try to get the guitar part down to a science so you can play it on instinct which would allow you to concentrate on your vocals more, and in Dave's case vocals can be a bitch since his voice is crazy.........It'll come w/time

my main advice: you simply MUST sing along to his songs. don't play. just sing. take the songs in the car CD player and blast them and sing your f'n lungs out. this is how you *learn* to hit the notes. you must do it. and its fun

after doing this everyday for like 4months i could hit almost all the notes

I partially agree. That helps to free you but you can damage your voice. After starting to record myself I found that I wasn't hitting notes that I thought I was. You really can't judge your voice when your singing behind someone else. I know there was some really good advice in a previous post so try a search.

You can get around this a little by plugging one of your ears while you sing. That way you can hear your own voice.

Or just turn the tunes down a bit so you can hear your voice. :roll:

Anyway, this is how I've learned to sing and play. Learn the guitar parts perfectly, learn the vocals in the car from CDs, and then work on putting them together. It'll take some time and practice but it will all of a sudden 'click'. Once it does you'll be able to magically sing and play most songs together with very little practice. You should also be able to start learning to sing songs as you are learning to play them. It's a pretty cool realization once it happens, but it took me years. I never was able to actively hold a conversation while playing either before it 'clicked'. Now I can. It's actually kind of weird how it happens seemingly overnight.

i spent some time in south korea last year, and singing bars are very popular, its almost like a sport. They practice at home and take classes simply to go out and sing in "singing bars". I've seen them put aluminum buckets over their heads (the bucket is just tall enough to cover the ears and mouth) so they can really hear themselves,,,,,Try it

Well, I guess I should intervene here since I take vocal lessons and do a lot of musicals and performaces:
1) Make sure you really know the lyrics very very well until the point where you don't even need to think about them. This is a MUST do not proceed, do not collect $200 until this is done.NOW.

2) Learn the guitar part very well. If there are any areas where the plucking seems inane just strum the chords for now.

3) Combine the lyrics and guitar, NEVER stop, just play huge chunks through and through while singing and playing no matter how shitty it sounds you will eventually mold it into sounding well... and remember: YOU CAN'T DO THIS WITHOUT PRACTICE.

4) Now that you are comfortable with this get the proper guitar lines down so that you can sing and play perfectly...

now practice
BUT
do not sing until your voice hurts, when you feel a little strained stop
- Always use your diaphragm (a.k.a. push the air through via your stomach muscle) when singing
- Don't hold back, let the notes come
- On the difficult notes just pluck the note over and over again and match the note with your voice so that you get the muslce memory of the note.

Just sing constantly, depending on where you want your range to be work high or work low. This truly works after a while, my singing range has improved a ton since I just started singing out loud.

here's a tip no one else gave: if you have a recording device, record the vocal melody on guitar (i.e. the notes being sung) and then listen to the recording while playing the actual guitar part. it can be tough to pick some melodies out but i have found that this helps me more than anything. by matching the vibration of your voice to the note, you can hit each and every note

this, in combination with the earplugging tip, should help
