rest the butt of your hand/wrist on the bridge...use as many fingers as you can...it will pay off later
once again, Neil Young is great for beginning fingerpicking...simple chords and fun melodies...
also, download "the art of the fingerstyle guitar" by Wishbone Ash for a thrill!!! 8)

all fingers on the right hand...keep your thumb (and occasionally your index) playing low E, A and sometimes D...

if you are really looking to learn fingerpicking....
take a look at Lindsey Buckingham...im not crazy about the music but his fingerpicking is unreal....and then look at Mark Knopfler...crazy lead work with fingerpicking...all the other stuff might help you get comfortable with using your fingers, but these styles will really open up your playing abilities
GOOD LUCK...
and start practicing

I hate metallica with a ripe raw passion, but "Nothing Else Matters" is a good song for learning a little finger picking. its a pretty good song, sounds hard, but really isn't that bad. Mostly you use your thumb index and ring, but occasionally i use my pinky. I don't think technically you aren't supposed to use your pinky, but im w/ the other guy, use as many fingers as possible. fingering chords is the best because you can play them fast and it sounds hard but really your chord hand isn't doing anthing but changing regular chords. 3 doors down "If I Could Be Like That" is a good example, I think he uses a pick, but i finger pick it for practice. well, that's it for me, hope it helps.

im gettin along w/ single notes, but i'm still confused. if u watch dave solo in everyday or grace is gone(well thats a duet but its nto w/ band) u see him hit chords with like a flick downwards of his fingers i hit all sorts of different strings when i do that. help anyone? and thanks for all i've gotton

This is a technique that i have just gotten use to. What i do is flick the 3 or 4 middle strings with my ring finger followed by my middle in one motion. it gives a nice multi string sound but w/ a little bass since you're hitting all the strings instead of just strumming them. so go at the strings from a slight angle so that you are hitting and strumming the strings at the same time. This is a really cool effect if you are using a lot of mutes too. like in everyday, you're only playing two strings but you also hit a lot of muted strings. that causes a full effect for the guitar when only playing 2 strings...and like always, practice makes perfect.
