How bad does our vocalist suck?

Unread post by m98ter » Mon May 26, 2003 6:59 pm

I've been playing with a group for a few months now, and I'm trying to decide whether its worth staying with it or not. I just can't decide whether I like the sound of our vocalist or whether I think he sucks. The group was started when he found me and my buddy Matt playing one day and asked if he could join in on his electric (which is where all the cool electric solo's come in) and then he started to sing (which is something neither one of us has any talent at) . I know he doesnt sound awesome, but I'm begining to think maybe he fits our style (or maybe im just trying to sugar coat him?)...regardless, he does add a lot to the "group" or "band," and I've never felt so creative as when I'm playing with the two of them. It would suck to either leave or replace him, cause I like him pretty well, but I don't want to be a part of something that really sucks and is going nowhere. So do me a favor and give it a listen if you would. The site is:

I think he sounds the best on Andi, not as good on SoCal, and the worst on Do You Dance? (no vocals on the first song...which is a snippet of a new one im working on). Id like to hear some other opinions though.

I listened to For Andy...he sounds ok...its hard to tell. with the way the song has been recorded. You should probably set your mics better/louder. The song does sound good though.

I use Cool Edit Pro 2.0 to record and a mic that came with my computer. (you know, the shitty ones that are supposed to stick on the side of your monitor) I place it inside of the guitar along the top of the guitar with mic towards the hole. It provides very good sound and with Cool Edit Pro, you can adjust hiss, noise reduction and amplify your recording so we don't have to turn our speakers all the way up to listen.

Here is a sample I just recorded on the fly. I think if you had your guitar louder and clearer and used CEP's track functions to layer the voice over and remove hiss that it would be great.

Oh, and also a few times his voice didn't seem to match the words correctly.....might have been the vocal/music mix though.

I have dial-up right now so I just chose to download the For Andi song since you said it was his best performance. First off what did you record with, the recording itself was kinda shitty, not the music just the hissing in the background. The singer himself isnt horrible but he's not great. Maybe if he took some lessons, he sounds like hes got an alright voice but just havent quite found it yet (much like a lot of us) You seem to really like playing with that group of people though, why dont you think about asking him to just play guitar and find a new singer? Ok, the songs done now, maybe I was a little too nice, his voice really isnt all that good. I guess it all depends on if he can get any better as to wether or not you should leave the band/get a new singer. Anyone else listen to this? Im terrible at critiquing voices, what do the rest of you think.

Everything was recorded on a analog Tascam 4-Track cassette...hence the hiss. Believe me, I'd love to be using a computer program to record but its just not doable considering that I don't have one at school, and my bandmate Matt's sucks so bad that It wouldnt suppport any program to do it with. Before too much longer I plan on buying a decent digital multitrack, but untill then the analog has to work for the moment. What was your opinion of it musically? Minus the crappy vocals? SoCal is a much more fun song as well....goofy lyrics and surf music is always a cool combo. Thanks for the feedback though.

No bad... I think the vocals get stronger as the song progresses (For Andy).

vocals could use some work... but with work and practice comes perfection, keep at it.. he has some skill, just has to use more air and his diaphragm

Thanks for the kind words. I really can't decide whether I want to keep playing with these guys or not, but I guess I might as well till something better comes around. Always thought it would be fun to play in more than one band too, so thats always an option. Did anyone listen to a song other than Andi? Curious to what some thoughts are on the other two.

Pretty cool...

You know, I like For Andi, it's got this Third Eye Blind feel to it, you know? Anyway, I think the singer can be pretty good with some lessons. He's got the popular slight raspiness to his voice, and hits the preferred range. Ask him if he's willing to take lessons - it can be well worth his (and your) while.

Good luck!

Wow, its so great to be compared to Third Eye Blind...or maybe just great to be compared to anyone worth a darn. That song is one of my babies, and everything you hear (music and lyrics) were all written by me, so its great when someone doesn't slam it. Everytime I think this thread is dead, someone else finds it and makes me question ditching this band. I'd still like some opinions on the other songs though if anyone cares to give them a listen. Thanks.

By the way, I can't stand that "raspiness" in his voice....just sounds too throaty to me. Someone should really check out one of the other two though (other than Andi). You'll get more an idea of what he sounds like....and hear his solos which are the reason I dont want to drop him.
