Need Some Help

Unread post by Mjazk26 » Thu Oct 14, 2004 12:07 pm

I have been playing for about 5 years but have taught myself. I'm interested in learning more about the different keys and scales to broaden my writing capabilities and gain some solo ability which is non-exsitant at this time.

Does anyone have any books you could reccomend? Thanx in advance,

Theory for the contemporary guitarist by Capuzzo. There also tons of books just with all kinds of scales you could buy.

As Matty pointed out the sticky has alot of stuff.

As for books here's a few that I thought were worth the purchase:

"How to write songs on the Guitar" by Ricky Rooksby- Sounds stupid but actually has a crap load of really pertinent info and is guitar exclusive.

"Mastering Modes for Guitar" - Every mode you ever wanted to know presented in a concise package. It also shows you the diatonic harmony associated with each mode giving you a better understanding of when and where to use them. Much better than those enourmous scale reference books. The example/jam CD is actually quite good as far as these things go.

"Guitar Soloing" Musicians Institute press- I really like the format of this book. My only qualm is that if your new to improv and soloing some of the lingo can go over your head. That and the CD that comes with it is fucking horrible. Those two things aside it's the best general book on Improv I've found.
