Vote for Change Review 10/5
Well, I just got back from the Kohl Center. What a great time! I hung around there and State Street starting at 1:30. I met up with a few people, met up with my cousin, got stuff to eat, talked to some of the people handing things out. The concert (got in a little late, and came in halfway in Jurrasic 5's set) was awesome. Ben Harper, great job, and his steel guitar playing was good. He did more radio songs than other ones. Still, he gave a great performance, very good. The bassist was great.
Here's my song by song review:
The Stone
Odd opener. The song actualy was a standard version, except the outro. the outro, unlike other versions I've heard, was more intense, and more energy.
One Sweet Word
The mood and performance (without the long intro) was very good. The song was the same, but the energy was very happy, and made you smile.
Rhyme & Reason
Good version, on the last verse, Dave was half muting the strings, somehow. It sounded muffled, but was obvoiusly on purpose. It wa sa nice twist.
Seek Up
Ok, this was a big one for me! Right when I heard the first 3 notes, like a crazed fan, I almost yelled, and my arms went straight up! Great version. Boyd was more on key than almost ever. I mean, Boyd shined so much in his solos. Then, Carter just made it perfect. All of it was great. I found nothing that dissapointed me in this song. I loved every note of it.
So Much To Say
Standard Version, good, but nothing much to say.
Anyone Seen the Bridge
Well, the jam got a little funked up, which was nice. Stefan was jumping all over the place.
Too Much
Another highlight. The BEST Too Much I have EVER heard. They had some weird effects on Dave's guitar and Stefan's had some gain on them, and some chorus effect. Then during the first jam (not the middle with violin) was funked up again, and was awesome. The solos, everything in this song was so new, and was fucking great. You HAVE to hear this version, it's a must!
Sugar Will
Good Stefan intro. This version had a lot more energy than usual. Good version, one of the better ones I've heard.
Joy Ride
I really liked this version. The middle part with Dave wailing was great! I had to grab my cousin's hands at first to get him to do the WOO part, lol. Very enjoyable.
Tripping Billies
Oh, very good energy, a regular version, but pumped up with energy. Just so much energy, I can't really describe it more. Just a rocking good time.
Typical Situations
When he started, you could barely tell what Dave was playing. Then, when I heard the notes again, my eyes widened. Me and the guys behind me were surprised. He did some lyrical intro I have never heard before. It was a great FULL BAND version. Butch came in the middle and again, funked it up, then returned to the regular. Very nice version, great to hear a full band version live.
Where Are You Going?
This was different. It was actualy more of a rock song, than a pop mellow song. I really liked it, very nice twist.
Hello Again
The Hand drummer from the Inicient Criminals (Ben Harper's band) joined in. Very Intensie. the Drummer's chord got caught and unplugged, but he kept going, a roadin ran up there and plugged him back in, lol. Great song, I think the best of the new ones.
Watchtower
Ben Harper! Man, he sang the last verse as well with the lap steal. This song, didn't have the normal intro, it went more right into the song. Now, the thing about this one, instead of one doing a solo, the next then gets a turn, and so on things were different. They all did solos ontop of eachother. It was a huge wall of sound, bursting out. Everyone going at it at the same time created such an intense sound. So intense, you could barely heard dave sing the, "money safe" part. Great Set Closer
DDTW
WTF?? What an intro. Just was tempting, for about 4 minutes (I think), they were just up there playing single notes ,letting reveb go, and Stefan would take his bass and add more Gain to it to make it harsher. It was just teasing everyone. It was very quiet, but so intense. Then, Dave walked up and sang during this swelling, "this land is your land . . ." Then DDTW, was a regular DDTW, nothing bad about it, but just DDTW.
Stay
This song was an Energizer battery, It kept going and going. It felt like the concert wasn't going to end, and I wish it was true, great show. They kept the jam going and going and going and going, I was getting so tired since I was dancing the whole time.
Great show, you need to hear Too Much and Seek Up, seriously.
The 2 people that shined the most was the drummer from Harper's band and Boyd. Boyd was on the ball, the whole way. Man, not a single flat or sharp, just so perfect, and so well done. Some of the best stuff he's done, I think.

Man, sounds like loads of fun! I wish I could've gone. Never been to a DMB show with guests onstage with the boys. Would've liked to see Mraz get up there with Dave at the Gorge, but oh well.
Glad to hear that about Boyd. When he's on, it's soooo sweet. And I will download Typical Situation and Too Much from this show (although I'd never go out of my way to grab a Too Much before). Glad you had fun.

Just a couple of quick comments about this show. Like you all have read, Seek Up, Too Much, and Watchtower will just plain sick. Personally, the highlight of the show was Hello Again. Its been great watching this song evolve into just a monster of a jam. Leon Mobley (once he was plugged in) added some funk. Great response from the crowd, considering probably more than half had never heard it before. On a sour note, some clown smashed my buddys car window and stole his friends purse that was on the floor out of sight. A personal message to the person(s) responsible....karma is a mutha my friend.

I agree with everything that has been said about this show so far. One thing that wasn't mentioned was the #40 tease before ddtw (it was very short). I knew that it was probably a tease, but I went nuts anyways. I, too, was lucky enough to sit front row. Our seats were in the 19th row, but we just walked there right after osw, and there was plenty of room, so we stayed. My highlights were anyone seen the bridge, Hello Again, and Watchtower. The emotion in Hello Again was rare. They were so into it that their enthusiasm spilled over into the crowd. That version of all along the watchtower was probably my favorite ever. Dave just kept looking at Harper like he was in awe of his work on the lap steel. He was just shaking his head like "holy shit this is good!" It was a great show in all, and my favorite ever because of our seats.
On an other note, Dave seemed to be a little more political in this show than in the others (from what i've read). He encouraged everyone to vote and all of that, but he actually said that hopes that everyone votes for Kerry (as if we didn't already know that's how he feels). I'm not sure, but I think its the first time on this tour that he actually vocally advocated support for Kerry. It's probably because he knows that Madison is such a liberal town.
Also, Harper was on from about 7:10ish to 8:15ish, and then dave went on at about 8:45ish
Oh yeah, and I thought j -5 was great, and I was rather unimpressed with Harper once again.
