Im gonna resurect this because my mom just told me she would buy me the Fostex MR8 for my birthday in mid July and I never got a response from someone that actually owns one or has used one. Anybody out there that can help me, I read the Harmony Central reviews but I dont always trust those for some reason.

I have an MRS-4 and it sounds really good. A few things that bug me about it: It doesnt have xlr inputs, records on smart media(max 60 minutes on a 128mb card) I'm always running out of space and those cards are pricey, and the software for getting tracks on the computer is not very good. Oh and AA batteries run out super quick so you have to buy the AC adapter or some rechargables. All those things aside I've recorded some pretty respectable stuff. It's nice and small too so if you intend to move around with it thats a plus. If you can afford it get a hard disk recorder or the MBox (which is only $200 more) It will eliminate lots of headache. That Fostex looks pretty sweet though and it doesn't have any of the MRS-4 issues. If your looking for something portable that may be the one.

Fostex MR8

Unread post by snodunc » Fri May 30, 2003 10:12 pm

I have the MR8, and I like it a lot. It's sort of difficult to figure out how to use, but once you get the hang of it, it's not too bad. The effects are nice, but I haven't experimented with them enough to get a good feel for 'em. It's really nice for multiple-take recording, so when you mess up on your first try, it only takes a couple of button pushes to get up and recording again. The 'undo'/'redo' buttons are really nice, too. Overall, the system is a little bit unwieldy because of all the buttons and cables running into and out of the system, but for its price, you can't beat it! Also, musiciansfriend.com has something like a 45-day trial period for it, so if you get it and don't like it, you can send it back for a full refund. I'm selling mine to upgrade to the MBox, mostly because I like software-based recording better, but for what it is, the MR8 is pretty good.
