Practice Advice

Unread post by mlb1399 » Wed Sep 29, 2004 3:42 pm

I was just wondering if most of you had disciplined guitar practice sessions. I mainly just go through circle of fifths as a warm up and then play 5 or 6 songs I know, and then work on songs I'm trying to learn. It is very unorganized and could be a lot more productive. Playing whatever song pops into my head probably isn't a good way to go about it. So what do you guys do and what do you suggest?

How much time or do you spend time on:
Scales and Modes?
Appregios?
Music Theory?
Learning new chords and different versions of chords?
DMB/Favorite songs?
etc.

I do all of those things, but never regularly. The scales and arpeggios are mostly warmups, and I already know the formulas to play most every chord there is.
Stay with me, safe and ignorant.

i play stream as a warmup
do a little bit of scales and soloing
no time on theory, i work on it at lessons and no other time...

for the most part i either know all the chords i use, or look them up as new stuff comes along, but i should learn more new varitions, instead of all major, minor, root, and maj7...

and i play some songs after that, but then do allot of improv, and writing.

I play some songs. Then do some improvisation. Maybe go through the circle of fifths. Take out a classical book and whip out some bach. Take out a scale book and work on modes and stuff like that.

Dont worry about learning new chords and stuff. Once you get into deeper theory you can pull chords you have never even heard of out of your butt.I do it all the time.

Circle of 5ths
C->Am->F->G
G->Em->C->D
D..........

Basically you play the root, the relative minor, the 4th, then the 5th. After that the 5th becomes the root and you repeat til you go through all keys.

I''m really not looking for help with Dave songs here, just a good practice schedule.

ummmmmmm.........

Unless there are more than one way to play the circle of fifths then that is not it.

play normal scales of:

C
G
D
A
E
B
F#
C#
Ab
Eb
Bb
F

Im pretty sure thats what it is.

If you look at my post above, you are adding the relative minor and the fourth before you get to the 5th and start over again.

I Rel. Minor IV V
C Am F G
G Em C D
D Bm G A
A F#m D E
E and so forth

So I guess what I should have said is it is based off of the circle of fifths, but you are playing stuff in between. It is a great warm up and gets you used to changing chords. After a year it gets oldm but it is a great warm up. This is something that my teacher showed me.

Once again the main purpose of this post was to get an idea of what a good structured practice session should entail.
