Random movie quote to make you seem hip and "with it": I'm thinking about getting metal legs. It's a risky operation, but it'll be worth it.

Dave may not use them a lot, but he still uses them in some songs: BEF, STJL, Seek Up, etc.
Look at the Dave songs that have the best guitar rhythms. The ones that stand up on their own without Dave even singing. Trippin Billies, What Would You Say, The Stone, #41, So Much to Say etc. Count the barre chords.

I'm just sayin find a more inventive way to play that major/minor chord and it will ultimately make for a better song (and a happier fret hand).

Case in point: Compare Jimmy Fallon's SMTS with Dave's SMTS

I mean, I guess theyre the shit if youre in love with megastock voicings and fret hand implosions..

seriously, they just make your hand hurt and dont really accomplish anything. I say once you get the very basics of barring down, find other voicings, inversions and shit and work on those instead; barre chords are boring.

shortlist of great guitarists who regularly say fuck it to barre chords

John Mayer, John Frusciante, Jimi Hendrix, Dave Matthews etc.
agreed
just stuff you should know i guess. dont tense up, elbow in..it'll just take time.

Yea, Im not learning it cuz I think its totally necessary...I just thought it'd be a good skill to have incase I come across it in playin. ive decided to stop playin dave songs for a while since its all I know so Ive been lookin for new things to learn and different songs to play...barring was just the first thing that popped into my head...

Ive made really good progress in the few days since I started this post...thanks for all the input
