Does he ever make the boom chick mute sound with his right hand only instead of using his fretting hand to mute the strings???

DAve uses palm muting alot, but he also gets a similiar sound by playing so close to the bridge. He palm mutes on an acoustic version of what you are, and i want to say somewhat on big eyed fish. He uses his right hand to mute on the second muted strum of LIOG. Id have to listen to some other stuff to know for sure about any other songs.

From what I know about Dave Matthews guitar....and I've studied his style A LOT...he does not use Palm Muting that much. He may use it sometimes...but one sutff like the mute in the middle of LIOG and the mute duirng the verse of Nancies......that is all Dave using his fretting hand with a specific type of up/down stroke that he uses ALL the time.

I can explain it more later....but from what I've gotten, he doesn't palm mute all that much.

He palms mutes alot more than that. However, he palm mutes more when he's playing solo, or with Tim.

But really, he palm mutes very, very often. Just more when he's playing solo or with Tim.

He also PMs on DIDO. That's an excellent example.

I just don't agree with that, to get that accented mute I really think he does use the palm to mute. Yes he is muting with his fretting hand but that extra "chuck" sound has to be coming from his palm. Its not palm muting per the definition but a type of percussive palm thingy.

He also uses a kind of semi mute strum on gravedigger which is really cool.

From what I have seen, and Kanter knows more about it than I do but, I see him muting with both. Not normally hitting the strings with his palm to get an accented mute you could say but more laying his palm on the strings to mute other strings. Thats the way I have seen him do it in mostly solo shows. I do it that way and it sounds right. Doesnt mean it is though.

He doesn't palm mute that much. What Jared said is right. I do know he palm mutes on Granny. That's an easy one to hear.

I mean, if you were here w/ me as I was playing guitar.....I'd be able to show you.....but Dave doesn't palm mute on that LIOG part...same w/ Nancies and countless others I'm too lazy to name.

I mean, palm muting can give you the same effect...but Dave just doesn't use it all that much....he does sometimes....just not that much

If you palm mute songs then mute them with your fretting hand, you can tell that he uses his fretting hand. They sound similar, but the fretting mute adds a more "Dave-like" sound

Ha.....maybe I'm wrong then. I was under the impression that Palm Muting is w/ your strumming hand. If it's w/ fretting hand then we're all saying the same thing....if it's not...then I'm saying the opposite of you guys

Sorry if I had my terms mixed up guys
