Too old to learn?

Unread post by BADGERDJQ » Fri Sep 24, 2004 3:01 pm

Hello all...decided to pick up my guitar that I have had since college. While I have made half-hearted attempts in the past to learn, I am basically starting from scratch. I am only 30 (some of you are probably saying "only?"...but just wait, it will catch up w/ you too), but I am starting to think maybe I might just be too old to learn. Would appreciate hearing from anyone close to my age who is or knows someone in my same situation. Take care all.

I am nearly as old as you and I have only been playing for about a year, but I am very happy with my progress...

The guitar is always something that I wanted to learn but I just never got around to it...finally I realized that I wasn't getting any younger so I went out and picked up a cheap acoustic. Now, with the help of the internet, a few books and many of the fine "youngsters" here at dmbtabs.com I can actually "play" a few DMB tunes and fumble my way through quite a few more.

Give it a shot, you won't be sorry. Besides we could use a few more "senior citizens" like myself around here.

If you have any questions just ask, the people on this board are very helpful.

Good Luck

Your never too old to learn. The only problem is trying to find time to practice what with a career and probably family. If you have time and actually try to get better you will. And within two years you'll be pretty decent.

If you were planning on becoming a virtuoso guitarist than maybe age would end up hurting you.
If you just want to do it for fun and spiritual enlightenment start playing right now! Go dammit! :D

I started when I was 19 btw. That's not old but it's by no means young either. If your dedicated to learning an instrument age should not be an issue. In fact I don't think I would have had the attention span at say 12-14 to stay with it and really study it for my own enjoyment. There's plenty advantages to being older.

My mom just started learning last year and she is 46. Keep at it. It can be frustrating at times, but it is a great feeling to finally get down a song. Keep playing man.

I'm actually older and have been playing about 3.5 years and love it. I think you should go for it. The tough part is putting in the time to practice but if this is something you want to do you'll find the time.

Good luck

Dude, I'm 30+ and I just started playing again two years ago. I find that I have a little more patience with it than when I was 17-18. When you have to fit practice time in between work, kids etc. you appreciate it more.
