yea, just barre the 1st fret for as long as you can. Just do that over and over until you get used to it.

A few pointers:

When doing a full bar it helps to used the edge of your index. If you lay it flat the grooves where your knuckles are will cause problems.
Barring takes a lot less strength than you think. In fact most people apply too much preassure and end up making everything go sharp.
Positioning is far more important. It helps to make slight adjustments in placement and preasure to get the right amount of both.

Don't get me wrong your def. gonna have to build up some strength and endurance but the ultimate goal is to be as relaxed as possible.

What I did was barre the first fret with your first finger. Dont add any other notes to it just barre with your first finger only. Then strum and move to the second then strum and move to the third and so on and so on. Use the side of your first finger. Its easy to do it that way. Do that exercise everyday and within a month or so you will have it down. Whenever you start playing Power Chords on the A barre with both your first and third finger if you understand what im saying. But just do the above exercise and it should help.

Curl the tip of your index finger slightly and remember with E barre chords your index really only need to fret the bass and high e or b string since the rest are fretted with your other fingers.

I've found that when switching into barre chords it helps to lay my non-barre fingers down first, then then whatever finger i'm using to barre. I know this may not be your problem, but it may help later on.

Am I the only one that thinks barre chords really arent necessary?

I mean, I guess theyre the shit if youre in love with megastock voicings and fret hand implosions..

seriously, they just make your hand hurt and dont really accomplish anything. I say once you get the very basics of barring down, find other voicings, inversions and shit and work on those instead; barre chords are boring.

shortlist of great guitarists who regularly say fuck it to barre chords

John Mayer, John Frusciante, Jimi Hendrix, Dave Matthews etc.

I make sure that my thumb is on the oppostie side of my index finger to give you better leverage and strength.

Dave may not use them a lot, but he still uses them in some songs: BEF, STJL, Seek Up, etc.

Add ants marching to that list of songs that involve barre chords.
