the brother's band

Unread post by 2Stepleadguitarist » Wed Sep 22, 2004 8:17 pm

Reguarding all the laughable comments about my brother. I've been getting that vibe myself, however those tracks are nearly a year old. Our agents won't even discuss the idea of hiring a singer. His singing and playing at the same time draws huge crowds and dozens of people email our site in adulation of how well he sings and plays. It's what the audience wants. I have a lot newer tracks from where we recorded a huge downtown gig in charlotte, NC called alive after five. We had the highest attendance of all of them in 4 different cities against all the other bands that did it once a week over the whole summer. In fact after we played they stopped doing it in charlotte because the attendance dropped so much. We are going to start playing originals at which time we will have a different singer. Again, thanks for the compliments on the solo. Do you guys want to hear those latest clips from that gig? They are much cleaner, but I still have to upload them into my computer and edit them first.

Don't bother hiring another singer just have him sing with HIS voice not Daves. Problem solved. Depending on how long he's been singing like that it might be easier said than done. Maybe you all could chip in and get him some vocal lessons or just tell him to pay for it himself. :D

Hey 2Step - I shouldn't have said "laughable". It's just that when you have a voice of your own, why mimic someone else's? But just make sure he sings often to develop his own voice, and not Dave's.

A word on equipment too. I playa Gibson Chet Atkins, and a 30th Anniversary Taylor 310CE with the new Taylor Expession sound system. The tone is undeniably better than any fishman pickup I have heard before. The Expression system is so sensitive that simply sliding my finger across the body produces a sound through the chamber. I recommend this new system to anybody who is shopping for a new high end guitar. And of course I swear by Taylor, but the Chet is a must for many dmb songs. I also play a PRS ce24 with a Marshall 3oth anniversary jubilee silver slant, and a ltd edition greenback slant. I push the cabs with a Peavey classic 50/50 all tube amplifier and use the digitech 2101 all tube preamp processor for effects.
So far these instruments have proven to be the "cats meow" to myself. For dave or tim parts they all deliver exactly what I need, but to each his own. If you're in the market for a new rig then that is my two cents.

Did you mean guitar or bass? I used to be an alcoholic. That particular show I was blacked out from about a dozen ativan and two buckets of beer for the last two sets. I'm sober now though. I play a solo on jimi thing that is much more representative of my style. But thanks, our old bassist was always telling me I played a lot better sober. I have a sweet lick from #41 on the new material I am going to upload.

Thanks man. When bud light sponsors half the gigs you play at it's hard to stay sober.

Thanks for your compliments. They mean a lot after all the adversity I've discovered professional players encounter. I must suggest against lessons though. I say only take one lesson and tell the teacher to play the most difficult thing he can. He'll disagree of course, but instructors love to show off and that's their value all in one lesson. They motivate you to play better than they can play. There is never anything else they can show you or tell you that you aren't already capable of with patience, a variety of different musical genres, and discipline to keep working until the chops are where you want them. This is light years away from DMB but I always suggest downloading Rock Discipline from John Patrucci of Dreamtheater. I never realized all that could be done with just 7 notes after having the blues shoved down my throat for so long, until I opened my mind up and listened, and listened more, and even more. For maybe only 3 seconds at the very end of a song in a genre you hate, you will find something that inspires you. That's where I found this solo, and burned up a brand new pack of elixirs writing it in a few of the longest most rewarding hours of my life. In fact I appreciate the term lead guitarist, but I hope in the future those of us who really cross boundaries are called hybrid guitarists. Some cross with the timing of carter beauford, dennis chambers, and danny cary; the fluid beauty of Miles davis, John Coltrain, and dizzy gillespie; the creativity of the fonz, flea, and victor wooten; and of course the mold-breaking inspiration of Dave Matthews, tim reynolds, john patrucci, or whole groups such as the aquarian rescue unit, tool, and jam bands in general.

I play this solo on my chet atkins. It doesn't have the resonance like most acoustic electrics have that makes quick picking difficult.

Is anybody interested in the tab for this solo and timing notation?
