guitar finish
guitar finish
I dont much like the gloss finish on my acoustic. I have an old silvertone that has what seems to be a paint finish. Anyone know if I can still get that put on my acoustic and how much it might cost. Let me know if you need more information about the guitars or anything.

they do call it finish for a reason.
for a while i was considering getting my Godins finish taken off and having it refinished.
the process for that is actually sanding (or something) off the finish and then going through the whooooole finishing process again.
you can get it done through luthiers (qualified of course), but it will be rather costly.

Re: guitar finish
how valuable is the guitar, if its like a secondary one you can most likely do it yourself, i refinished an old washburn of mine, wasnt that hard.kcw wrote:I dont much like the gloss finish on my acoustic. Its an Ibanez PC300 CE NT it cost me about 300.
The only thing is I cant ruin it cause its the only acoustic/electric i have at the moment.
I just hate having to clean the gloss and how slidy it is. I really like the finish on my silvertone and its like some kind of paint.
Would regular paint after stripping the other finish mess up the wood or anything? Or is there a special kind of stuff to get or what?

No I don't, lol. I just know it can be done safely. I want to get my finish off my MK someday. John lennon did it to 4 of his guitars over the years (most noticeable is his gibson acoustic and epiphone casino).filmdude100cms wrote:ask rant he knows allot about this.

well, its hard to ruin it playability wise, unless you're using a power sander. By regular paint, what do you mean? yor best option is to sand off the body with like 150grit sand paper and a sanding block, (sides will be most difficult) but dont sand off the stain! then after all of the gloss is gone switch to a lighter maybe 230 grit paper, then 300, and finnally 400 grit to finish it off. Should be smoooooooth now. Okay, now paint wise, you could put heavy duty paint on it in 1 coat (industrial rustoleum) but that would most likely affect the sound because it would interfere with the vibrations of the sound board. Or, you could go with the whole paint process thing, meant for guitars, with primer, white or black undercoat, topcoat and finish (gloss satin or matte) Or, what i'd do, is stain it the color you want (you would still see the woodgrain) and then put a layer of polyurethane on it. It takes like a week to dry completely but it is soooo good lookin when its done. Ive done the stain and poly twice and the industrial paint on an electric once. The only way you can mes it up is cosmetically, lest u sand with a fervent passion. (through the body) is cosmetically which theoreticly could always be undone by sanding it off again and trying it a second time. I had an issue with a mirror finish i put on a strat (not mine) and i had to sand it all off and start overkcw wrote:Its an Ibanez PC300 CE NT it cost me about 300.
