Jimi Thing question...

So you're amazed as to how Dave's rhythm guitar slaps and strums so "perfectly"...but you can't. Ask all things about Dave and his guitars here.

Jimi Thing question...

Unread post by goalten106 » Wed May 14, 2003 11:35 am

I have a question concerning the intro to Jimi Thing, which I have been attempting to play for a while but haven't got it down yet. My biggest problem is the part below underneath which I put the (******).

Code: Select all

Verse
E:--------------------------------------------------------
B:---------------------------9------9---------2----------
G:----------------------x---9------9---------2----6h7--
D:------------9-----9--x---9h11--9---------2----7----
A:------7-----9h11-9--x--------------11\--------------
E:-7h9---9----------------------------------------------
                  *********
How do you guys play this part? I've trying to play the 9 9h11 part with a downstroke, then come back with an upstroke on the 9 9 part, and then play the x x x part with a downstroke. The upstroke part isn't working for me though.

Any advice? What direction to you strum while playing the intro?

Thanks...
Nate

thanks... i guess i just probably need to practice on it more. ive worked on it a bit since posting and its sounding better. i guess when i listen to dave play it, the 9 9 and the percussive x x x seem so damn close together and i cant mimic his quickness yet. go figure :D!

another question... how do you mute the low E? i usually just press the tip of my "1" finger up against it, but then that leads to problems with the upstroke because sometimes i nail that low E off the mute. any advice?

i havent been able to play this intro very well in the 6 months ive been playing, and it was one of the first dave songs i tried to learn! everyone seems to talk as if its rather easy :? . oh well... back to practicing...

thanks dave

people say its easy, cuase it is for the basics of it

But its VERY hard to make it sound good. Keep at it, play along with recordings, it will click one day.

if u want me to put up a recording of it i will do one for u.

For me it just clicked one day and im still working on it

GOOD LUCK

Mike

yes, low e...no problem..

thumb man. its all the thumb. just on those notes when you need it muted bring your thumb up and around . it feel sooo weird at first but man you're gonna need that for lots and lots.

works like a charm

can't you just not strum the low E? that's what i do, that or hit it with my finger tip.

Yeah, I just use my finger tip. Whenever Im playing anything barred on just the five strings below the low E I make sure my finger that is doing the barring comes up far enough to touch the low e and mute it. Or I use my thumb when doing other stuff besides barring the fret. Getting used to using the thumb really helps out though, everyone should try to be able to use it effectively.

thanks for the all the advice... dave, ill give it a try with the thumb. sounds like it should work. im still a bit "clumsy" when picking out just two or three strings with the pick, so i definitely need the muting at this point.

mike (mboz12), that would be cool if you could post your recording if its no hassle... i would love to hear it.

thanks all
