food for thought

Unread post by mangold » Fri Sep 17, 2004 9:42 pm

I am in the process of reading "Dave Matthews Band: Music For The People" by Nevin Martell and I came across a fascinating passage i thought I'd share with all of you. It is pertaining to DMB online forums:

"A sense of community pervades online discussions, ticket and tape trading, website presentation, and DMB fans treatment of one another. Tape-Trading newbies are greeted with enthusiastic offers of B&Ps (whereby someone sends Blanks and Postage to a taper who will then tape a copy of a particular show) Even the oldest questions are patiently answered, everyones opinion is respected, and fans often times meet up with eachother before shows. Rudeness and negative DMB bashing are not tolerated and instigators email boxes are quickly flooded with flames. There is a general air of peace, love, and understanding that seems to emanate from DMB camp into the mentality of their fanbase."

I have seen nothing but the opposite on this website and i found it funny that this passage was sso contradictory. Any thoughts?

There is actually quite a sense of community on this website. I myself have physically met several people from the boards, and had a great time on each occasion...the patience w/ noobs thing is just the product of the band being as old as they are man. I don't know of a single messageboard that hasn't had people bash newbs for asking redundant questions, and I've been around since nancies was just a mailing list. The lament about the downfall of the fanbase started a looooooonnng time ago, and everyone thinks its relevent only to their time. :)

To put it into perspective, look at other bands that reach as wide of an audience as dmb. There is nowhere near the camaraderie that we've got going. Nothing's perfect.

i understand i just thought it was wierd because i wouldnt call this forum a place with "a general air of peace, love, and understanding" (look at filmdudes first stream post or the dave or tim poll i started) i just thought nevin may of taken it a bit to far.

I think it's pretty shitty of you to make assumptions based on your very short time here. And does it not count for anything that I tried to smooth things over or the fact that your Dave vs. Tim thread is probably the only noob bashing I've ever done?
Do you think the band would appreciate the message boards that put them under such intense scrutiny (a perfect example is the Dave vs. Tim thread) WHY DOES EVERYONE HAVE TO RATE EVERYTHING HERE? I hate that more than anything. Don't flame me for saying that because last I checked I'm entitled to an opinion just as you are.

i'm sorry that you feel that way. but really, this place does have all those things. we are the best message board for dmb out there. we're a family. with the huge influx of new people lately, its hard to see that, but ya know, we really are.

If I didn't like being here I wouldn't be here. I like to whine a lot basically. Just put up with it.

I'm not used to people posting at this hour. The west coast is a graveyard.

What time is it over there in Stockholm?
