rookie - how to choose guitar strings for folk guitar

Unread post by lamborouille » Wed May 14, 2003 10:13 am

Hi everybody,

I am just starting to enjoy my new guitar, a Yamaha DW-8 (left handed), a nice guitar I paid 400 euros/$ ...

Up to now I was only playing classical guitar, with a cheaper guitar, and I never bother chosing anything than the "usual" Augustine strings. If you don't know it, it's just the standard strings you can find in shops in Belgium.

I've seen some discussion about how often one should or would change replace strings...

I would be interested in a short synthesis of "What are the parameters to choose strings ?"

Since I am not yep playing 2 hours a day, I don't expect to change strings every 2 weeks so not easy to make comparison...

Any advice welcome !

Thanks,

Olivier.

If needed, here are a few lines on the Yamaha DW8:
Top: Solid spruce
Back & sides: Nato
Neck: Nato
Fingerboard: Rosewood
Bridge: Rosewood
Body depth: 100-125mm (3.93”-4.92”)
Scale length: 650mm (25.59”)
Tuning machines: Diecast gold

Styled on traditional dreadnought lines, the full-scale DW8 delivers a powerful, richly resonant sound courtesy of mahogany-like nato back and sides, and a solid spruce top using bracing adapted from Yamaha’s handcrafted instruments. Eye-catching attractions include a white-bound rosewood fingerboard, gold machineheads and a choice of lustrous colour finishes.

Left-handed players, too, can take advantage of this fine guitar, as it is also offered as the DW8L.

(You understand this is from a Yamaha website .... )
