Short thick Fingers = not a good guitar player??

So you're amazed as to how Dave's rhythm guitar slaps and strums so "perfectly"...but you can't. Ask all things about Dave and his guitars here.

Short thick Fingers = not a good guitar player??

Unread post by dbapollo » Sun Sep 12, 2004 10:47 am

I was watching some of the instructional vids from this site and I was amazed at how far the guy playing could stretch! then i realized how freaking long and thin his fingers were!

Mine on the other hand are short and thick (slightly) so i'm getting disheartened that this physical deficiency would mean that i would never be able to play those cool dmb guitar licks. *shrugs*

To give ya guys an idea...
I can play Crash Into Me decently...
I'm having a helluva time playing Satellite though.

dont be too hasty. Look at KG from tenacious D. He has sausage fingers and he can still strum with the best of em.

I happened to have the luck of seeing him the other night with his new crew, Trainwreck. What a wild mix of music they play. Hell of a good show.

Stephen King, one of Taylor Guitars clinicians, who they send around the country and world to demonstrate their equipment is a short little gnome looking guy (no offense Stephen...it's a look) with really small, fat fingers and this dude was the Fingerpicking World Champion. Fingerpicking is not really my game, but I watched this guy and couldn't believe the reach, speed, and accuracy he obtained with is fretting hand. It was totally nuts...and that's when I realized that anyone can do it.

Dude, I've got baby hands. Like mine are probably half as big as Pats', but after lots of practice, the stretches like from satelite come naturally. Stick with it, you'll get it, I promis.

Yeah. There's this guy at a guitar store I go to who's damn good and he's short and has short, fat fingers. I just saw him tremolo picking some scales one day and was pretty impressed. He's a prick, though. That's why I go to Music-Go-Round to jam. :D

I have somewhat short fingers (from my mom, but hers are so short she can only play open chords on the guitar, but is a good fingerpicker). Ever since I was young, I could stretch them like hell without them ever hurting. I guess that's why billies never gave me a problem with fingerning, and that I can play all the way through crash easily. Captain is fine on my fingers too. I just tested, I can stretch them as far til my bones won't let me go farther

I think for Bass guitar, though, you really need longer fingers.
Yes, I am in a box
