Is John Mayer a better guitar player than Dave Matthews?

So you're amazed as to how Dave's rhythm guitar slaps and strums so "perfectly"...but you can't. Ask all things about Dave and his guitars here.

this is true, mayer still has more talent.

edit: let me just make it known, john does have more talent at LEAD, but he lacks what dave has for rhythm. i think daves music is 100x better than john, and that john cant write lyrics (like dave anyway), but if dave were to try to stand up to john, he wouldnt be able to.

Note the topic subject was "guitar player." Yes he is better, yes JM has more soul than DM on the guitar. Just listen to his solos, which Dave simply can't do. Nothing more soulful than a sustained fullstep bend with vibrato.

one bent note with vibrato........ or strumming your heart out every second

umm.. its a lot more than 1 bent note. just in case you didnt notice soloing is a lot harder than strumming.

eh, I won't get into a fight over it. I like both of them. Both are talented. I just prefer Dave. Personally I will never be impressed by another solo after hearing Mr. SRV.

John and Dave are different styles..... Dave can't play like john, and john can't play like dave.

I think in over all guitar playing skill, John has Dave by quite a bit. I haven't heard Dave do a whole lot of improvisation. John has the chord knowledge, fingerpicking technique and percussive effects down perfect. But in melody, soul, feeling, composition, lyrics, overall songs, Dave can't lose.

Ive listened to that and it is fucking amazing, how the hell did he do that. I cant believe he could just make up some lead stuff that goes exactly with the vocals, he is a very talented guy, especially for being only 25.

Yeah people seriously underestimate his talent .... So please don't say that John can't play Dave lol  I think its the other way around , but i wouldn't say that as i haven't heard Dave play any John stuff yet and that would make be talk down on Dave which ain't what im doing right now :)

i think if dave wanted to rip, he'd rip. but its not really his style.
i know that john has incredible skill, he does an amazing Lenny, but theyre two different styles. john has to hold himself, while dave has the band.
