a djembe will take some time to learn the ins and outs of. how to tune it right and finish it right and play it right. it's taken me about 3 months to sand it down and finally have it tuned so it sounds good with band and it will hurt your hands and bruise you before you build up the calluses. it still hurts and i'll get bruises on the palm side of my knuckles. just be warned. otherwise. i say go for the djembe. all too often i find myself in a room full of guys that can play guitar and if you wanna jam you can get kinda lost in that but a djembe stands out.

I was really interested in getting a djembe....in fact I am going to get one.

You have to actually sand them down to sound right eh? What size is yours? What brand? I don't know too much about them so any info would be great!

i own a synthetic remo. but i have played a few that are real african djembes. i used to borrow one but that friend took it back when he moved away. the remo cost about 200 or so and is 14". and you don't have to sand it. no. but you probably should. the inside of those things are not finished and if you look at an authentic djembe from "the motherland" you will see it is perfectly smooth inside. it took me about 1 or 2 hours to set my drum up (by which i mean to do all that i am about to tell you. sanding took about 1 hour). also you may want to get help from a drummer friend. remember this is not just like a tamborine or a shaker but it has a pitch and a timbre and needs a set-up. you'll need to tighten the head to sound right and make sure the tension is even and there are no dead spots in how it was tuned. it takes a lot of know how to set up a drum kit and break out the beats. drums, even though they are really just hitting something to make a noise" involve a lot of setup to be able to just hit it. you've seen carters setup right. cuz he likes to have all those different tones. so a djembe is a step towards that. i can't stress how helpful a set drummer can be as far as tuning and checking the tuning and finding a good pitch to let that djembe ring.

also have you ever seen inside a big kick drum how there is a pillow, or a comforter or some other thing to mute the drum. well you will want to do something like this to eliminate what i call the "ping". once you get the djembe in tune it will produce many wonderful overtones and harmonics but the one that i can never seem to mute by simply hitting the drum different is the ping. it is very high pitched. so i did a lot of research on the internet and had a buddy who plays drums and a couple of djembes in his role as a percussionist for a band. he helped me out by using a little bit of foam insulation and the ping was greatly reduced and made controllable. so there are little intracasies(sp?) that you will find. just like when you first learn of harmonics, string guages, picks, tuners, bone saddles, etc. there is a bunch of cool stuff you will learn about drumming just with the intro of the djembe.

the other thing when tuning is whether you want a higher pitched slappy djembe to help cut through when with a band and possible even a set drummer (i tuned way up when i played with a 6 piece band, you lose the deep low notes but gain it back when people can actually hear you and shoot you can always use that sansamp, which i would recommend) or would it be just a djembe and a guitar in which case you would tune it low and let it grumble in it's overtones (probably not even miked). and i just always carry my tuner for where ever i might be playing it.

ultimately though, if you just buy one and bring it home you can play it that night and it'll sound good. making it great has a lot to do with what i've said above but mmore to do with technique and your personal style than any of that.

with djembe's the greatest drummer can make the worst drum sound only a fraction less than the best drum in the world. so focus on that.

and this thread is borderline for needing to be moved to the other instruments section.

Thanks a lot grock. That info will surely help. I will have to find a drummer to teach me how to tune a drum...I could probably ask the people at the music store. I have been looking at some already and have seen the Remo ones. I think I may go for one of those.

And yes....it should be moved now..since it was hijacked with djembe content

it's just like having a good guitar tech at your local shop to ask all those dumb questions and to have them help you out. at the guitar center here in chicago and the one in STL i know most of the guitar guys and drums guys pretty well just cuz i come in there enough times. over christmas break i went to the STL GC 3 times in the same day.
