Cedar Top vs. Spruce Top

Unread post by thedirte » Wed Sep 01, 2004 10:11 am

Ive been picking through posts trying to find some compelling arguments, but came up empty. I've played both and am still impartial to either (they're both seagull artist series). If I was buying for looks, cedar, but I'm not. Help.

i think it matters what kinda style you play. aggresive strumming sounds better on spruce, and light fingerpicking sounds better on cedar. Both are great woods-

I own a solid spruce top now and really like the sound, and I couldn't really jam on the cedar top guitar because of the annoying old guys in the guitar store showing off (you all know what I mean).

I played this one at a different shop, and I can buy it with the case for $750.

ceder is excellent for finger picking. my 514ce has a ceder top and i love the deeper, more intense tone.

I personally like the deeper tone of cedar. Especially for dave's songs...cedar works great. His chord formations are far from bright (think nancies, billies, etc.) so they sound nice and ballsy with a cedar top. If you play the shit out of a song, it starts to muddle up on a cedar top, but thats only if youre strumming-with-the-intent-to-break-a-string style strumming. Youre not going to be dissatisfied either way, especially if youre fairly new to the guitar. Just play both, and go with what you like. There is no right answer.

I'm not a beginner, except to these forums, it's just that ive never owned a cedar top guitar. I'm just a little worried that I might miss my bright spruce.
