ghs strings

Unread post by paywad927 » Thu May 08, 2003 7:10 pm

i was using d'addario medium strings, but my guitar instructor told me that they were too heavy and i should switch to ultra-light. i asked him what brand he recommended and he said ghs (he didnt carry d'addario for some reason) so i said what the hey, ill try somethin new. i just put these strings on and they suck. the sound is too tinny. for anyone that is tryin different brands of strings i would not recommned ghs, unless you like the tinny sound they make. as soon as i get a chance, im gonna go get some d'addarios. anyway i just thought id share my unfortunate situation with yall. once again i would NOT recommend ghs strings (btw, this was the main idea of this post).

but my guitar instructor told me that they were too heavy
I wonder what his reasoing why as to why they were to heavy for you. How long have you been playing?

As of 2 days ago, I switched to mediums after playing lights on my new guitar. I think I will stick witht the mediums. I get a great sound. I could not imagine myself with ULTRA-lights for my style. Seems like you would lose mass sound and volume. To each his own though as the saying goes.

Agreed Paywad, I too have a strong dislike for ghs acoustic strings. I guess this goes for all ultra light strings, but they have no soul. The ghs' also die out after about 2 weeks :(

the reason he told me to switch was because the mediums were bending my neck. ive been playin for about 5 months and he showed me that the neck was actually bent a little bit, thats why he recommended lights or ultra lights. i like the feel of them and i think once i get a better brand (d'addario is my preference) i think everything will be just fine. i really dont think i lost very much sound or volume, not enough to make me switch back anyway.

Blue Steel strings are actually the cryogenic Dean Markleys. They're alright, but I'm into using just the plain old Dean Markley signature strings. I learned from my great sage of a guitar teacher that "strings are strings". This guy says he just buys the cheapest sets. The man is amazing, he backed up Ted Nugent in a band when he was 15 and can play Joe Pas stuff note-for-note.

ah...Dean Markleys...its been a while...

I tend to agree with you that for the most part, "strings are strings", but I might also venture to say that "electric strings are electric strings", while Acoustic strings can make or break the quality and open up new dimensions of sound and feel of a guitar...

Yeah, I don't care who the guy can play, at least on the acoustic guitar, strings are NOT just strings. Anyone with half an ear should be able to hear that.

Now, that being said, that DOESN'T mean that all $15 set of strings are better than all $3 sets...

I'm just saying that putting too much emphasis on something somewhat extraneous like strings can detract from what really matters with the guitar- the guitarist himself or herself. I do recognize the tonal diffrences between certain strings, but I'm just trying to make a point.

Just wanted to see what a double quote would look like with the new format. Pay no attention.
