Fool To Think help (sorry if this is a repeat)

So you're amazed as to how Dave's rhythm guitar slaps and strums so "perfectly"...but you can't. Ask all things about Dave and his guitars here.

Fool To Think help (sorry if this is a repeat)

Unread post by HeyLookItsJerry » Sun Aug 29, 2004 4:40 pm

I looked for awhile and couldn't find what I was looking for. So I apoligize ahead of time.

On that note....can't quite find the timing for the Fool To Think chorus. At first I thought it was in 4, 4, 4, then 5 to complete the phrase but I found myself forcing it. I can play the tab but just can't quite get the feel I need to groove to it.

Thanks guys.

Try playing along to the cd or a recording.

Well, with the chorus, the down picking is constant, you never get a break at all, it's bam bam bam bam bam bam bam bam bam bam bam. Also, you got to use your pinky, and it's also got to keep moving.

Oi. And to think I took a break playing DMB songs on my drumset cause I was getting frustrated. :?

By using my pinky, are you suggesting not using a pick for the song. I actually found it easier with a pick...but if you think its easier without, I'll try and adapt.

Well, you should try using a pick and not using one, and then stick with whichever is more comfortable to you. I can play it with a pick.

Um, your Pinky on your fretting hand (that would be hell to just use your pinky on your strumming hand, lol). When you play it, you will need to use your pinky fretting the guitar, no way around it. It also will do the most moving when you play the chorus. It will keep jumping from fret to fret.

Yes, it is easier to play it with a pick than without a pick, unless you are used to it.

Hoooo ahhh.

Thanks for all the replies. Looks like you guys have this down. =/ Playing the chorus isnt as hard...more just playing it WITH dave. Hard to feel and keep up. Guess that's mostly just practice.

During the verse, is he strumming along muted strings in between the single notes in an eighth note pattern? That's the kind of feel I get and I think I here it? May just be carter giving me the feel.

Try rolling your hand, (fingering the frets just before they're played and removing them immediately after) this is a good exercise in itself and it will help you get the speed you need for that part more quickly

OK, I tried palying this song for the first time last night. I just started loving this song recently, but is there another way to play the 5403 part?
I was just playing it 545 last night cause it makes the fingering a lot easier.

Wait... huh? You finger the 5043 like a C chord moved up two frets - it's easy

I guess, its just weird cause my hand is in the other position for every other chord exclusing the 024.
so the only way i can play it quick enough is to play it the way i was. i guess imagining it like a c chord makes it easier.

I am sure the original poster is long gone or figured it out, but I believe he has a problem following along because the chorus switches to 9/8 from 4/4, so you will feel like you are forcing an extra beat in there if you don't swtich your counting on the time signature.
