What guages of strings do you use??
What guages of strings do you use??
I've used light, mediums and everything in between but i am just wondering what your takes are on these different guages.
I am sure many will say that mediums are the best. but why do we think dave uses the lights.
i just want to hear some opinions about the guages and not the brands necessarily (unless there is only one campany that makes that guage).

Isnt Dave using Mediums
?
Anyways for the past 2 years i have only been using D'Addario Phosphor Bronze Custom Light .011 the EJ26 pack , with a few exceptions of trying the other gauges in the D'Addario series ....
Before i started using D'Addario , i tried out Martins , but i felt it like their life was very short compared to D'Addario .. I like to get the strings changed atleast every 2 weeks , otherwise im getting grumpy lol , and with the Martins it was a good 3 maybe 4 days , then they felt dead ....
Anyway thats my input

is dave using mediums??? i always thought he used the lights??
so dustydave is a light man. and a frequent string changer. i am kinda thinking of going back to lights or custom lights but i haven't used them for like 3 yrs (since my first 3 sets of strings were lights but otherwise i have been using mediums or a mix of the two) and i just bought a 3 pack of mediums (i won't mention the brand cuz some assy people might make funof me
)
have you ever tried the mediums and didn't like them or have you always been a light man and they have just never done you wrong to have to change?
i know lights are recommended to beginners cuz they are easier to push down but are they easier to play as well. like speed and chord changes? i wonder about that?

lol no im not just a light man , i love both Mediums and Light , i made a little error in the first post i can see lol , i haven't used lights for 2 years , i have used mediums and lights , on and off , i would say the past 2 months have been lights only lol ...
I like both sets and im an open minded person to try new kinda strings , i even tryed some strings named Turbo a couple times lol cheap strings but the problem is that the day after you put them on , they already seem like you have played them a month lol ... I strongly DO NOT recommend those to anyone
And yes im a frequent string changer , i don't like it when my strings don't have that brand new light tone ya know , but it do happens that i get so lazy that i let them be on till you need to place a truck on the frets to press the strings down lol
Anyways come on people get some posting done in here so we can get your opinions ....
PS Ticohans aren't you using extra lights on ya Taylor
?

Right now I've got some mediums strung up on my 714. The last set of strings I had on were the D'Addario EXP med's, and they weren't the right set of strings for my guitar. I'm not saying they are bad strings. The med EXP's are just wrong for the cedar top. I would like to try the EXP lights. But once my current set of meds is dead-which will be pretty soon- I'm going to string up some lights. Quite honestly, what I would really like to do is order a string sample pack, if that makes any sense. I try to buy a few different string types, but I don't like buying in single packs, as it's always much cheaper to buy in bulk. But when I buy in bulk and get a new set, it's always harder to compare between multiple sets as I sit on a single set for so freaking long. But here's what I think I've found for my guitar: D'Addario lights are great. I don't want to get anywhere near extra lights. There's no reason to go any lighter than light because you start to loose vibration on your top if you do. Anyway D'Addario lights are great, meds are pretty good. I'll know which is better for me in a week or so once I change to lights. D'Addario EXP med's are not all that great for my guitar. I want to try the lights. It's been forever since I've had elixers on my guitar, and I need to try them again, too. I don't remember how well they sound, but I know I liked them enough at the time.

Nice input there Hans
And yeah i know what you mean about buying more sets at a time to save money , i always buy atleast 3 sets at a time , but right not it doesn't really matter cause they're the same price
But isn't there a really great place to order some sample packs or something ? If anyone knows then please post a link , i would be interested in looking for sure ..
PS i agree with the D'Addario's Light are great

i use lights on both of my guitars. id like to use some mediums or even heavies on my 12 string, but its under enough stress with lights.

Yeah Grock because , you might get a set of strings that you just love ya know but , on the other hand , how would you know if there is anything better out there if you don't try it all eh ? If you find a set you absolutely love the tone of , then you can always go back to them if all the other sets you try don't do that great tone for you .... Its an experiment really , and all customized to your personal eargrock wrote:are you guys saying that it is good that even when you have found a set of strings that you like that i might be a good idea to switch it up and buy a single pack of something else just to try it out. i can see how this might be. and yeah i wanna hear about those sampler packs.

"it's an experiment"
that's what i always said about my band and why we always sucked. mostly it was cuz the other guys wouldn't show up for weeks so every practice it was like me and then only one other member. shit at least i was able to play with some one (feel free to write a good joke about that)
also about my djembe. that thing can be tweaked and sanded and taped and tightened and in the end it is all just an experiment.
hey shane, didn't we decide that a 12er should only use lights in some previous post. can any of them handle mediums, let alone heavy. maybe that's something i should be asking about when i am shopping for my 12.
and has anybody ever tried heavies on their 6 string. i might have to do that sometime. would it be worth it or would it just rip the bridge off my guitar?

Thank yougrock wrote:shit at least i was able to play with some one (feel free to write a good joke about that)

Well i like the way lights and mediums sound ( Currently LIGHT ) so im not even thinking about trying heavy , not to mention i don't want to risk anything breaking the guitar lol , then we would have to make a new thread called " How to glue the bridge back on " or " What do you do when you just got the headstock in ya head " something like that

i've broken strings and been slashed across the face (luckily no scars yet but enough to draw blood) but man i can just seee someone just jammin out with his buddies and then: Crack! bamm! you got a headstock in ya head.
i guess it would be good to know what to do in that circumstance.
