FOR THE LAST DAMN TIME: THE STONE!!

So you're amazed as to how Dave's rhythm guitar slaps and strums so "perfectly"...but you can't. Ask all things about Dave and his guitars here.

FOR THE LAST DAMN TIME: THE STONE!!

Unread post by Corona5k1635 » Tue May 06, 2003 1:22 am

so so sorry to do this to all of you but....
I'm am oh so close to mastering the stone but i can't figure out how in the hell he strum-picks this sucker.

I can play the whole damn thing perfect if i rest my hand on the bridge and pick it. (dont get me wrong, my hand never stops moving, just like dave's). but, when i do it that way i take little little up down picks of the part of the verse after the 31x3xx chord or else i hit every other damn string!

that could be confusing how i said that. this is my basic cause for madness:

HOW THE HELL DO YOU STRUM THIS SONG (half strum i know) LIKE DAVE DOES ON THE VIDEO'S OF HIM PLAYING IT??? LIKE WTF?!

HELP!!!

THANK YOU

dave

OK First off everyone one should watch that recording. Dave is not muting with his right hand at all he holds it behind the pegs and strums two or three stings while muting with his left hand fingers. the first mute is with his #3 finger on the low E string while he holds down the A 4th fret and mutes the D string at the same time with his #4 finger. I keep that #3 finger in the same place and mute the low E and A chords when they aren't played.
the #1 finger holds down the G string on the 2nd fret and lays across all strings below I hold it in this placement until I use it to hold down the D chord 2nd fret and mute all below that. Now the #2 finger is only used for the D chord 3rd fet i don't mute with this finger. The one thing I noticed is dave starts the song only hitting two strings max at a time and ends the song struming this part with the mutes i showed you and if you practice it can be done.

ahoy maitee. we are in the same boat. (wtf?)

ive been workin on the stone and i think the way to do it is to play it one note at a time real slow. mute everything but that note until that works then move on to the next. ive got a couple of notes down. its really really hard.... :(

when you are on those two quick notes, place your pinky on that A string on that fifth fret. lay your hand down somewhat over the higher strings (to mute). use your 2nd and 3rd fingers to lay over the low e string. now you can strum any thing you want, but only the note on the A string will ring. as far as the rest of the verse, just pick the notes...eventually you're hand will learn to lay across other strings so you dont hit them.. like a life of its own!

wait, maybe i'm missing something, but if you can play all the notes as they're supposed to be played while resting your hand on the bridge, what are you looking to change?? are you playing it too slow? can you not move your fingers fast enough? what about dave's technique is going to make you play this better?

in the end, it's all about control, which is all about practice. i can be strumming the daylights out of my guitar, but strum only the strings i want to without really thinking about it. it becomes second nature. muscle memory and all that jazz.

Iam sorry about the way that sounded I just found out I had peanut butter and jelly for lunch kind of gets me going. I know you say you can, I think of struming as your hand making a full up and down movement past all the strings and back and down and so on, and lets say we speed it up to stone tempo and you mean you can it each string one at a time no other strings are touched but that one you just wanted to hit .

tomami, it looks like there was a slight difference in the way we used strum, but even doing what you describe (moving hand all the way up and down past all strings at Stone speed) i can still play just a single string, provided i can use the right hand to mute, which is what dave does. now, that being said, if I want to play only a couple, even a single string, why would I strum up and down over the full range of strings? that doesn't make much sense, does it? this gets at what i was referring to in my first post. if i want to strum just three strings, that's what i'll do. if i want to strum just four strings, that's what i'll do. if i want to strum just two strings, that's what i'll do. none of those require moving your hand up and down past all strings. that extra movement is just wasted effort in which causes you to be more likely to screw up. and playing with what i'll call "localized" strumming, even at very fast speeds and very loudly, yes i can play the strings i want.

hope that clears things up.

Yes I think we are talking about strum with two different meanings.
I don't know what you mean by palm mute with the right hand.
I would love to hear how this works in the verse in stone, and what strings you are hitting while you fret the notes.

P.S. Have you seen the kfog radio station video of stone?
