Pick for stone

So you're amazed as to how Dave's rhythm guitar slaps and strums so "perfectly"...but you can't. Ask all things about Dave and his guitars here.

Pick for stone

Unread post by ecs787s » Fri Nov 22, 2002 8:11 pm

I was just wondering if dave uses a different pic for the Stone. Maybe a thinner one?- because i cannot really get that quick flippy sound on the D string that he gets with a .60 pick. The pick gets caught up on it when I am not using a thinner pick. I am talking about the 55-2-3-2 part.

im the opposite

I'm the exact opposite when it comes to that. Also, im pretty sure dave does use the same pick for everything. But they arent those orange jim dunlops everyone talks about. I saw his pick from a picture at the warehouse site and supposedly it says dmb on it in a curved shape. Its still the same orange color though so everyone thinks they are the same. I mean they could be, its just not the exact same ones u can buy in the store. Personally I like using the .71 gators.

basically, I was just wondering if the flexibility of the pick makes the difference. OR maybe I just need to practice much, much more. It is probably that.

I kinda just forgot i can't play the stone, at least perfectly. That main riff i have been messing with isnt perfect. I started learning it on those orange .6 dunlops that i mentioned before, then i switched to the heavier .71 gators because i'm not used to holding the pick so damn close to the point in order to get faster picking. So i found it easier to use a heavier pick so i didnt have to grip it so close to the point. Since dave plays it with the thinner one, i would guess u need more practice as do i. In your first post i didnt understand why u would use a thinner one instead of a heavier one. I felt that a heavier one was easier for me. Either way, its one helluva tricky song to play.

I Think it will come with practice no matter what the pick.

I think so too. I say pick a pick that you seem to like and stick with it. You'll be more consistent.
good, and you?

Yeah, I think you guys are right. I just need to practice getting the pick on both sides of the d string, without getting it stuck on one side. Next, I need to learn how to switch to the 3,1,x3 faster. Thanks

If there's one Dave song that takes a shit load of practice is The Stone. It's addictive when you do get better at it, though. The tougher songs are usually funner to play. But often times the simpler ones are.

peace.

Addictive is right. I use Dunlop nylon .60mm. I tried using the tortex .60mm and couldn't it. Maybe if I working in the pick a bit it would come, but when I tried it in the store, it just didn't work. The nylon picks are more flexible than the tortex. I love my light grey Dunlop Nylon .60mm picks:):):):)

They are tolerable, too. I have stack of 10 .60's on my desk right now. I just which ever one I pick up first.

Actually, when I first started playing guitar 2 years ago, my brother gave me a .73mm dunlop nylon. Then when I went to buy picks for myself, I didn't know about thickness, so I just matched color. I did that WRONG. So I ended up with the .60mm. Then after realizing it compared the two and like the .60 better. Maybe that's why I don't break strings as much as some people do.
