I don't know Tim, but from what I've read I really don't think he cares about fame. He's an amazing guitarist, and I truly believe one of the most underrated guitarists out there. Maybe that's where the questions of fame and or noteriety comes into play?
If anything, Dave is humbled and honored to have Tim play with him, and we should be too. Not to sound snobbish, but it irks me when folks use the bathroom or get a beer when Timmy plays at a D&T show.
Tim Reynolds is well known enough amongst his peers, friends and fans to not need, nor ever have needed Dave Matthews' help.
You pretty much hit the nail on the head there. Tim has actually turned down more mainstream record deals and features in guitar mags, etc... because of his lack of a desire to be hugely famous.
There are actually people on the Tim Reynolds website who don't even listen to and have never listened to DMB, that got into Tim through listening to TR3, Tim's band from back in the day.
So I do agree that Tim wouldn't be as well known, as just about every more than casual DMB fan pretty much knows who he is, but I'm sure that he would still be playing out, and be a popular guitarist, in his own right.
Apart from that, look around, mainstream music pretty much sucks right now. And there isn't really a place for a guy like Tim Reynolds, or any other reputable musical act. I'm not say that no good bands are coming out now, you just have to filter out the bullshit. But I mean, no teenage girls are going to want to hear a 7 minute acoustic guitar instrumental song on the radio. But actual music fans and fellow guitar players can hear players like Tim in local coffee shops, and other places, because fans of real music that is not pre-packaged pop know where to find real music. I can't say that Tim would still be touring the USA as he does now, but I'm sure he would still have a steady stream of gigs that would pay the bills and fuel his creative genius.
I've always like music that is somewhat below the radar. One thing I've always liked about DMB is that they are hugely popular, but they are not EVERYWHERE. They have a huge fanbase that is always growing, but you don't see "It's good to be the Dave Matthews Band" or E! True Hollywood Story DMB or any of that bullshit on 24/7 like you do for the other pre package popshit. I doubt we will ever see a Cribs for DMB.
DMB rises above the radar when an album comes out, or they're doing a benefit, or Dave's doing Farm Aid or whatever, but DMB usually resides just below the radar as far as the mass consuming public is concerned. The masses would rather see which Hilton sister has the clap, or the new ab exercise that Britney Spears is doing.
Artists like DMB and Tim are a world away from mostly anything in the mainstream. DMB and Tim have many things in common, one of which is that they pretty much tour constantly. It's never big MTV or Entertainment Tonight news when DMB goes on tour, because acts like DMB and Tim are TOURING acts. They don't have to make a big deal like the pre-packaged pop or nu-metal bands that go on a "huge" tour for like 2 or 3 months and think they're badasses.
