#41 Studio Version

So you're amazed as to how Dave's rhythm guitar slaps and strums so "perfectly"...but you can't. Ask all things about Dave and his guitars here.

#41 Studio Version

Unread post by TheGoop » Fri Apr 25, 2003 11:19 pm

Does anyone know the guitar part in the studio version of #41 that comes in at 0:35? I've seen someone play it on an acoustic at a coffee shop performance but I can't remember how he played it. Thanks

Actually, that riff is part of the whole #41 evolution. Dave has played it several ways over the years. Here's a quick little history lesson:

The progression based off of the aforemention riff

e-------10-x-x-
b-----8----x-x-
g-7-7------x-x-
d--------------
a--------------
e--------------

This was the original way Dave played the song. There's an old OLD show, and I'm unsure of the date, where they play it for the first time as "41 Police". At this point in time the song was very raw with no real organization or lyrics - it was just a great jam piece that was coming out. Ths riff was just played continually the whole song and there was no chorus yet.

Then the song was refined and refined and, chronologically, the next time we really hear it is Live at Luther College in February of 1996 prior to the release of Crash in April of that same year (it is probably safe to assume Crash had already been recorded and was in the final mixing and production stages).

At this point a variety of riffs for this song came into use. The intro uses the deeper voiced chords based off the 5325-- progression...the infamous stretch chords. After the intro he switched to the changing bass note chord progressions starting from 5--78--. The rhythm of this progression is variable depending on the songs performance at a D&T show or with the full band. After the vocal part of the song, Dave switched back to the 5325-- progression and then the old, highly voiced riff ---7810 is now only used as the outro of the song.

As for the recording on Crash it's hard to say who is playing what. The riff that starts at 0:35 is obviously that ---7810 riff and is carried through the whole song on top of what is typically played. I originally assumed it was played by Tim Reynolds but it could also very well have been an extra track by Dave Matthews or the only track he played altogether. Who knows??? If you listen carefully though, the same series of riffs from Live at Luther College are generally how the song was recorded for Crash.

Over the last several years the song hasn't changed much from the guitar's point of view. With or without Tim, Dave Matthews has typically used the same series of riffs. The Everday outro started getting thrown in around the beginning of the 2001 tour which is sung just before he switched to the ----7810 outro.

On the more recent 2003 acoustic tour Dave has ditched the original riff altogether which, to me, is a little disappointing. He simply switches back to the 5325-- progression after the vocal portion of the song, jams it out, and carries it through to the end of the song.

Wow....what a long post. Hm, well I'm just making up for being away for two weeks! This was and still is a great song by DMB. It's simple and well-written...and worth knowing the history of.

Great history lesson there...it never felt so good to be schooled on dave

Hey,...does anyone know what dave wrote this song about??? I love this song...my song of all songs for several reasons. But I've always wanted to know what dave had in mind when writing this. all I could ever find was that he wrote this around when he was splitting from a certain manager or somehting??? I dunno..sounded like it had nothing to do with the song anyhow.

To summarize from a few different sources - #41 was written at a turning point in Dave's life/musical career where he was coming to grips with success. It seems when the cash started really flowing in that everyone was wanting a piece of the action and there were some conflicts with management (not necessarily the manager). I believe some people walked out and some showed up just for the money - the typical that comes with fame. This song serves as a little reflection on this time period. I'll try to dig up my "Step Into The Light" book and look for what it said exactly.

Oh yeah.....and just so you guys know 9/1/95 is on video and I have it. It has an original version of #41 on it. You'd be suprised as to what he's playing....it's really just a modified version of everything he does now.

Basically the verse is JUST the 7 & 8 that we play. I have to check again to see if the 10 is in there as I'm not really sure....but there are no bass notes. The part right after the verse where he isn't singing....he plays the outro.....then the "I will come in...."(w/ diff lyrics) is exactly the same but only on the low E and G strings(no A in there for the FULL Dave chord). It's pretty cool and an amazing video...enjoy all

Sure, just flaunt the fact that you have it. Whatever, Mr. Cocktease...

Someday I will find out where you live, and break into your video stash. Its got to be insanely, ridiculously cool.

Ha...honestly, I don't have that many video's.....maybe like 5VHS's. Most of the stuff I get now are all MPG's. Now MPG's.....yes, that is VERY cool. I have about 24GB of DMB Video's on my computer. If you want to see a AMAZING video collection(which I haven't even seen it)...go break into Sinclair's house. He's got like 40 DMB Master DV's of concerts he's taped. Now THAT'S AMAZING. Peace
