Jimi Thing Slapping Technique???

Unread post by myonlybliss » Sat Aug 14, 2004 10:34 pm

On Pat McGinnis's video, right after the 11 hammer ons---he says to use an upstroke to hit the 9's again. Right after that---he does a slap or mute on the strings and I can't tell whether he is just slapping the fingers of his left hand down or using the pick with his right hand on a downstroke to do it. Any help would be appreciated.

McInnis. ;)

I'm just laying my hands over the fretboard and muting on a downstroke.

Hey---I appreciate that. Kind of a difficult song for a beginner---fun to play though.

Hey, i've got the same problem and it is the reason why I just registered on this board.
I watched the "Jimi Thing Intro/Chorus" Video about 1000 times but i still dont get it.

Code: Select all

E:---------------------------------------------------
B:-------------------------9-----9---------2---------
G:---------------------x---9-----9---------2----6h7--
D:------------9-----9--x---9h11--9---------2----7----
A:------7-----9h11--9--x--------------11\------------
E:-7h9-----9-----------------------------------------
                  ^

The "^" marks the place, where the mysterious sound comes in. It's second 34 in the video.

Is it really a downstroke? You say "on upstroke" in the video. Do you apply constant alternate picking in the chorus?

You just slap the strings and mute then with an upstroke I believe.

It's a quick upstroke to hit the 9's, then a quick downstroke to get that muting sound.

Yeah it's better to let the man himself explain it.

I usually play it like this.

Code: Select all

E:------------------------
B:------------------------
G:-2/6--6h7-----------<7>- <---2on2&6
D:-2/7--7---------5---<7>- <---3on2&7
A:--------------------<7>-
E:------------5-----------
I always call the song True Reflections, though. Strange....

Huh? True Reflections and Jimi Thing are completely different songs!
