Starting to sing?

So you're amazed as to how Dave's rhythm guitar slaps and strums so "perfectly"...but you can't. Ask all things about Dave and his guitars here.

Starting to sing?

Unread post by Jay » Tue Apr 29, 2003 8:58 pm

what is an easy dmb song to start singing? i meant coordination-wise, not voice wise. i can sortof do Big Eyed Fish but not very well. it's coming along very slowly. i can do christmas song too for some reason.

but absolutely nothing else. this is the most frustrating part of guitar i think....arrgggg......where should i start?

I think it sometimes depends on what songs you know the best/have been playing for the longest cuz I can sing to some harder songs just cuz Ive known them for a while. As for a song that is just easy I think Ants, Christmas Song, Lover Lay Down and #41 are really easy, but maybe cuz Ive been playing them for awhile. As for a tip on how to start out singing or how to get the hang of it, do a search on this topic it has been brought up many times, probably once by me too.

something's been SO close to clicking. i think what needs to click is my strumming hand doing strum patterns without thinking about them. i can switch chords in time fine, but the strumming throws me off. i've been SO close for so long though, it's very frustrating. i could sing christmas song back in december when i could barely play the frickin guitar. now i can play the stone and still nothin.....

click damn you!!!! :P

starting to sing "can" be discouraging....lord knows it was for me

I would suggest you not be soo hard on yourself if you play back your mp3 through the computer...I cringe when I listen to myself, sooo...practice practice practice.....I'd go with P4WYG though...

Oh yeah, Pay For What You Get is really easy too. Hey Jason, once you get a few songs down and can play and sing the ones you know really well can you just learn a song and then sing over it like immediatley or does it take like a frickin year to be able to sing to a new song? Cuz I had to straight up master a song to sing over it and its getting easier for other songs but in the future I dont want the process to take forever, tell me it gets easier, please. And by the way your voice is good and your guitar playing is awesome, I still feel bad about that critique I gave you, it didnt come out that way it was supposed to.

Yes, it does get easier.

Crash Into Me was actually first for me, that one was really easy for me to play and sing. Satellite came pretty quick, too. I really can't get PFWYG, though. Hopefully soon.

Strangely the first song I learned how to sing and play was SMTS. Tripping Billies was the next one again strangely. I guess I'm strange.

i love doing PFWYG, its pretty easy for me. i definitely think it gets easier to sing and play along....i dont think you have to keep learning it over and over again, it's like you just learn how to do it in general. i can learn to play a song on guitar and by the time i get that down i can sing with it instantly.

I know one realization I had while learning to play and sing was simply learning how to divide your attention. No matter how well your hands "know" a song there is still a certain amount of attention that has to be given to your playing. That can be a very difficult thing to do when you're really getting into the singing and the emotion involved.

It really takes sometime and it is something that just hit me recently. Try not to focus to much on either your playing or your singing but instead imagine them as one. Imagine how everything sounds together as opposed to concentrating on them separately. I know this sounds a little flakey but once I realized this everything became so much easier. Maybe it will work for someone else...who knows. Good luck!

Yeah you got a point in that , i mean its all about practice , everyone should realise that , without practice you never get anywhere , but you do need to devide those parts up like :

What chords are you playing
what rhythm
Keeping the voice in key
And lyrics ....

the lyrics part can be tricky sometimes lol then you just throw in a little mumbling or a little dave kinda screaming , some yeah yeah yeah here and there , thats how i learned it ....
