Antsmarching.org's supposed meaning of The Stone

So you're amazed as to how Dave's rhythm guitar slaps and strums so "perfectly"...but you can't. Ask all things about Dave and his guitars here.

Antsmarching.org's supposed meaning of The Stone

Unread post by lordmelt » Thu Sep 11, 2003 10:46 am

so anyways, i was on antsmarching the other day, and i stumbled onto a thing where they state the message/meaning of some of his songs, the whole way i interpreted the stone really had nothing to do with the site's interpretation, i totally know songs are meant to be interpreted in many different ways, and do not necessarily have one set meaning, but i was more interpreting it as a song of feelings about a relationship going down hill, and the nostalgia of wishing it was the way it used to be, coupled with the feelings of uneasiness, suspicion, and that unexplainable feeling of not being able to put your finger on something that is wrong...
anyways, the site says its about death and what not, which i understand after thinking about it, but, i was just wondering(no pun intended) what you guys thought about the song, and how you interpreted it,
i am excited to see what other people think, because it really threw me off when i read the antsmarching explanation, i dont know where they got it, from an interview or whatever, but i am curious,
any feedback is well appreciated

i think of it like we are here and kinda noticing how there is something more to this world. that there is somethng that is not right about the way everyone says the world works.

kinda like asking God to help out and that uneasiness of putting your faith in something and wanting to run from what you know is right.

------------

then i also think of going through a hard time in a relationship where everything is stressed and stuff. and wanting to go ahead with things and forge ahead and asking your lady friend to come along and take this plunge with you.

----------

either way this song really speaks to me. i used to hate DMB with a passion. then i heard this song and thought it was awesome. it was one a skating video and i used to watch the video just for the song. for like 4 or 5 months after i heard it i still had no idea it was DMB. then a friend bought me the album cuz he knew i really liked this song and i was flabbergasted. and it really opened me to DMB. it is still my absolutely favorite song.

I'd have to agree with Grock. I've always felt a very "help me out in this desperate situation" feeling from the song.

The Stone to me is about this kid in grade school who threw a rock at me and knocked me out. He was a real dick head. Sympathy for the devil by the stones is about when the Arizona state University Mascot got pulled over for drunk driving. Litttle pink houses by John Cougar was a bout little pink houses that just kind of stood still all the time after time after time

I get this:

A man (dave or not) who has done what would be a horrible thing, yet would do it again, and will run from the punishments always. Despite this, he always knew it was wrong, and felt it as well. He then asks, just hoping, that this one person will come along, and help him on his run, to cheer him up, and keep him going on this journey.

I think it has to do with love. If you've ever seen him perform on the Charlie Rose show...He interpolates the "only fools fall in love" song. And he has done it more then once I believe. Hauntingly beautiful.

I heard from somewhere that it was one of dave's julia grey songs. and that it is actually a sort of apology for writing Halloween.

but this Jesus/Judas thing sounds really cool...

Here's a morbid interpretation that I read a while back on nancies.org. Not word for word, but this is what the guy basically got from the song.

Think about The Stone, as an apology/story/whatever told through the eyes of Anne's murderer. (If you don't know who I'm talking about, then you're probably not visiting this site anyway) The lines from the narrator are being delivered right after the incident. If you think about the song from this point of view, then it makes some sort of sense. The narrator has an undying, yet very twisted love for the subject. His uncontrollable passions for her have resulted in something quite tragic. Just think about it this way and listen to the song, and it's kind of creepy. The worst part, is when Dave starts singing "wise men say...". So, is this Dave trying to find a way to make sense with, or cope with something this horrible? Is he trying to understand why things ended up this way? Who knows. I personally think of the song in a more simplistic way. What do y'all think?

It is if you like my take on the matter. =) Of course, it can really be interpretted as any act of betrayal, I suppose, but this is the big one. Here's my interprettation as it was posted on nancies- damn! Over a year ago already. I remember posting that like it was a couple months ago. I hope you enjoy.
The Betrayal

So after reading this thread I gave the song a couple of good listens and read the lyrics over a few times.

I feel that it's much more about Judas' betrayal of Christ than Peter's denial of him, and could even be Judas talking to Christ about the impending events and possible avenues of escape. Observe:

I've this creeping suspicion that things here are not as they seem.
Reassure me. Whay do I feel as if I'm in to deep?

Here Judas is questioning his actions, seeking reassurance from the pharisees and priests that he's doing the right thing. He clearly feels that he has made a mistake of biblical proportions and is beginning to see the magnitude of his actions.

Now I've been praying for some way to show them I'm not what they see.
Yes, I have done wrong, but what I did I thought needed be done; I swear.

Here Judas begs for people to understand that he had good intentions. He was afraid of how big the Christian movement was getting and the persecution of their followers and the punishment that could be doled out on all of them for their heresy. He perhaps hadn't fully contemplated the severity of Christ's own punishment as the leader of this heretical movement.

Oh unholy day! If I leave now I might get away.
Oh, but this weighs on me as heavy as stone and as blue as I go.

Clearly Judas is contemplating just fleeing the whole scene, and is overwhelmed with guilt.

I was just wondering if you'd come along. Hold up my head when my head won't hold on.
I'll do the same if the same's what you want, but if not I'll go; I will go alone.
I'm a long way from that fool's mistake and now forever pay. No, run I will run and I'll be okay.

Now Judas is trying to convince Christ to flee to safety with him, and support, love and forgive him as he's always done. Jesus, knowing his own destiny, declines and tells Judas to carry on the path, and Judas reluctantly agrees, admitting his mistake and realizing that there is no turning back now. He toys with the idea facing up to his action, but ultimatly chooses to run from it.

Long way; Bury the past for I don't want to pay.
Oh, how I wish this: to turn back the clock and do over again.

This is pretty straighforward. He just wants to forget his misdeeds, to go back and not betray Christ.

I need so to stay in your arms, see you smile, hold you close.
And now it weighs on me as heavy as stone and a bone chilling cold.

Judas is again pleaing with Christ to flee and telling his friend how much he needs and loves him. He is more and more overwhelmed with the guilt of his actions. The bone chilling cold could be the contemplation of his own suicide, or the simple realization that Christ is going to be martyred.

I was just wondering if you'd come along. Tell me you will.
One last plea to Christ to flee with him.

So that's what I get when I listen to The Stone. I can honestly say that I never really listened to this song until I read this thread, but that's what I see when I do listen. I am also not a religious person at all, so that I would get a religious interpretation out of it speaks pretty clearly to me about the content. Heavy as stone, indeed.
