You almost can't even compare the D-28 to the HD-28V. The only thing that is the same is the wood, and the bracings completely change the sound. The HD-28V has such a loud, long, projection that it will fill the room and you will be amazed by its sound. The D-28 standard will almost sound like crap compared to the HD-28V. No knocks on the D-28, unless you are comparing it to the HD-28V.
Both are nice guitars, and the V neck is definitely something you should try before you commit to it. I don't know how many people I've seen by a DM3MD and turn around and sell it because they just couldn't play it.
Look on Ebay....there was a ton of HD-28V's last time I checked, but it's been a while.
