Unread post by Boyd » Thu Nov 21, 2002 5:23 pm

I've been playin guitar for almost a year now and I'm able to play lots of songs...but lately I been tryin DMB songs and I find they're about 10 times harder than almost anything else. Im still tryin to figure out what would be a good song to start out with.

Typical Situation? Well, what i did was listen to a cd or two, pick my favorite song and fail at it, ....then mess around at tab site and learn the one that sounds cool.

it is tough to think of the first song you should learn. the first song i learned was crash and then trippin' billies, so its however you want to learn it. i started learning the songs that were my favorite and once i realized how awesome dave's songs are i started learning the rest of them and now there all my favorite.
easy song to learn is song that jane likes. proudest monkey. i'll back you up. nancies. go from there.

You should be able to get So Much To Say all the way through. There are only 3 different riffs and 2 of them are very similar.

I've already almost got the intro riff and the one that goes in with it down. I think I might actually be able to get this one.

i had the same problem with not being able to finish a song until i could almost finish every single dave song. that's when i started cleaning up shop and learning everything. so much to say is soo much fun to play(didn't mean to ryhme). i love the way that song is layed out. i can play it perfectly.

Stay, Crash, Satellilte, Minarets, and One Sweet World were the first couple of Dave songs I learned, those are all pretty simple to start off with.

If your using your index, middle and pinky fingers, than thats pretty much all you can do. There aren't any alternatives that i know. The only thing that i can think of that might help is stretching your hand in that position and holding it for as long as you can.

On those notes, and anything similar dave wise, I have always used index, ring, pinky...I guess I am just wierd...Just more comfortable for me.

index ring pinky is more comfortable for me. Depending on the song, I'll do the Dave index middle pinky for that chord at times.
good, and you?

when it comes to playing that part of the song i don't use the standard pointer, middle and pinky. instead of going forward, i use my middle on 3, my pinky on 5, and then i go down 2 strings and back two to the 2nd fret on the G string with my pointer. its the same note, i just find that its easier for me to go back into the groove of the song from there. i can play it the real way but i prefer my way on that song. i use the standard way on satellite, but ofcourse dave does play satellite three different ways as well.
