Guitar Pick or Finger Pick

Unread post by deicer » Mon Aug 09, 2004 11:51 pm

Ok - I just cannot figure out if Dave, in the Dave and Tim performace of 3/28/2003 (the DVD), if he is using a guitar pick or he is finger picking while playing The Stone. Does Dave play most of the time with or without a pick, or does it depend on th song?

I am trying to learn the stone...but it looks like I just need to figure out the muting of the strings. Dave looks so fluent and effortless when he plays...wow.

Thanks everyone, this forum is amazing.

Well, Dave does use a pick, it's very hard to play it without a pick and make it sound right, it took me 2 months to get it. Tim, on the otherhand, was most likley not using a pick, he only uses one when he is rapidly alternate picking, like in Stream.

Dave almost always uses a pick. I can play The Stone without, but it sounds like ass if I don't use a pick. There are a few songs he fingerpicks on though. Baby, Oh, Some Devil, Christmas Song are some. Just practice man, you'll get it. If I can learn that song, then anybody can.

I don't think studio WAYG is fingerpicked. In the studio it was on a 12 string, you really can't fingerpick on a 12 string. Now live, yes he has fingerpicked it live, mainly before Busted Stuff (and on the music video).

Also, isn't GIG is always fingerpicked?

I would be hesitant to say always, but I have yet to see a version where he doesn't fingerpick it.

You play without a pick mostly right?

I used to, but to get that "Dave sound" I went on a picking mission.

I have troubles finger picking a lot of songs. I can do the Watchtower intro, everyday, and Christmas song. Also Good Riddance by GreenDay and most of Stairway to Heaven. I find I have more accuracy with a pick, and you have to learn double when fingerpicking (fingerings and picking patterns)

ranting, that is a great point for me in the discussion that we haven't had yet. you must use a pick for certain songs if you want to match the sound perfectly. fingerpicking/no pick is an amazing skill but you can't fingerpick everything, especially dave!
