I played one when looking at guitars to buy, cause I was right in that price range too. I was almost dead set on buying the Big Baby, just cause of what people said about it and the fact that it was a Taylor. When I actually picked it up though, I didnt like it much. The guitar is 15/16 size, slightly smaller than a normal dred. Because of this, its not very loud at all. As mentioned before there's a pretty noticeable lack of bass too. The tone is decent, and it does have the nice highs/mids that Taylors are known for, but I feel that there are several other guitars in that price range that are better buys. Seagull guitars (or Simon & Patrick for a narrower neck) are slightly less expensive and have a much fuller sound, in my opinion. Just go try a whole bunch before you settle on anything.

Well, a lot of Taylors are strung with extra light or light Elixirs from the factory. From what I've seen and played, Taylors respond much better to heavier gauge strings, which vibrate the top more and give more tone. Try a set of medium strings and see if you like the boost in volume and bass more. I use extra lights, but only because 99% of my playing is done plugged in, and I can boost the bass w/my preamp. In reality, my guitar is fairly quiet unplugged. Hope this helps.

I own a 714 ce and just recently strung it with med's, and let me say that they are definitely NOT the way to go, at least for my guitar. I think that the extra lights are too light, but lights are perfect.

I have both a 410 and a Big Baby. Obviously the Big Baby cannot reproduce the beautiful sounds of the 410, but at the price it is an amazing sounding guitar backed by Taylor's reputation for quality. You can't go wrong with it.

I would definitely buy one again.

The best advice I can give is to pick up every guitar you can and play them all; you need to find the guitar that is right for you.

P.S. I keep the Big Baby strung with Lights and I think it's plenty loud. True, it does lack some of the bass of a full-sized dred.
