This just me?
When I try to rhythmically mute while strumming, I tend to let up on the strings and strum. Is this just me and what other ways are there to mute?

It depends on the sound youre looking for, really. I do what you're talking about sometimes, but for dave songs I tend to leave the chord fretted and exaggerate my strum on the strings that are muted (usually the bottom two or three) to get that slap sound while keeping the chord ringing clean. Muting is really cool, because there's so much you can do with it and there are a variety of ways to accomplish it.
