this has been bugging me for the longest time, does anyone know what this line means?

or have any idea whatsoever?

Yeah, that's what I thought, but wasn't 100% sure. My first guess would be that ants have a short life span, approximately one day. Lights down - end of the day; your life is over before you can comprehend. You might be able to tie this into the entire "wasting your life" angle. This is assuming you've already made the connection between the hustlebustle life of today with ants.

I'm rambling and free associating right now.

I'm not even looking at the word for word lyrics of the song, so if this is WAY off, I apologize.

i KNOW that ive read that not all of dave's lines mean anything at all...and i THINK i read that about this line, that he didnt give any thought to a meaning(but that might have been about some other song)

well, the song is about the lives of people and how they're just machines like a bunch of "ants marching" around, with no real meaning. so i'd assume that lights down you up and die means that the average person
Lives their life where they go to sleep, wake up, go to sleep wake up, until they die. aka "lights down (go to bed) you up (wake up) and die (and die)"

i'm just guessing though, i could be wrong, but that rarely happens

This song always kinda was the sum of DMB. It's a lighthearted march almost and it is just saying that death is just another step man.

Song's about the hustle and bustle, then when it's over the lights go down and you up and die.

actually i think it's quite the opposite. i think its saying that we only get one shot at this life and once it's over, it's over. so don't waste it.

well by that line, i always thought he was speaking sarcastically or as the voice of what everyone else is telling you to do.

the song is really about taking these chances right now.
