Less is more when playing live? What do you think?

Unread post by c_tietze » Thu Aug 05, 2004 4:14 pm

Personally when I try to play in front of people I tend to get so excited I play to loud or strum to hard.

It has taken me a while but I've found by playing more carefully and by keeping a "light but deft touch" I sound better and more controlled.

Any thoughts?

yea I agree I try to play with a real light touch anymore, I also find that I will sometimes play too fast when I'm live, which kinda screws things up if you plan to improvise.

the softer playing seems a more intimate connection with the audience.

Weird, I don't think so. People frequently bitch at me that whenever I play and sing with my acoustic they can never hear my voice so I've learned to always to scream it out and thus strum like hell.

I get nervous and rush shit. Just slow down, that's all I do, my voice is clearer if I'm not jumping up and down the fret board uncontrollably.

Nerves and alcohol usually = playing too loud.

I usually ask the sound guy to turn the guitar monitor down so I can hear myself better.

Guitar is a great instrument, however as I get better I have realized that precision is always better then strum-rage. LOL!

What sucks is when no one gives a shit about the solos you play. I'm so glad I am finally getting out of christian rock and going to college.
