sorry it took so long to respond. in response, i think that with a decent sound card, your computer would be just fine for recording/editing. The digital recorder would definately be nice to have, but it is not 100% necessary (you know what i mean). To edit the tracks after they are recorded, you would have to connect it to a PC anyways... so why not skip the middle man for now and save yourself some money. If you want to improve the quality a little more after that, by the recorder.

Just my $.02

cheers

Getting a decent mic is the most important thing. Like tatertot said if you want to have freedom editing tracks than your going to have to get them into the computer anyway. Not to mention it makes burning a disk that much more annoying. You have to get a card reader and transfer the files over then you probably have to convert them etc.
It's a little more expensive but you might want to check out a firewire interface . Add a nice large diaphragm condenser mic and thats all you need. Because it's powered by the firewire port you could literally take it anywhere. It's the best solution for laptop recording imo. If I was using a desktop I would get a high quality sound card. PM me if you want more specifics.

Pretty simple answer to this...if you have alittle less than 300 this will give you a pretty sweet little set up...it will allow you to record your guitar and vocals at the same time and both at pretty good quality...the usb interface http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/US122/ and a shure sm57 (a staple in any studio) http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/SM57/ you dont need a firewire interface but it is going to be nicer concidering it has mic pre's which allow you to enhance the quality of the signal before it goes into your ibook....but really isnt needed...

the shure sm57 is prob my favorite mic of all time and i agree that it is a staple for all musicians. I think the president even uses this thing.
