Guitars are better with age?

Unread post by billywestom » Sat Apr 19, 2003 1:42 am

I still have my first acoustic guitar, which has only been about a year and a half now. I have been reading many online reviews of Martins and Taylors and such, and have seen that many people say that they get better sounding with age. Can anyone agree with this? What exactly makes the guitar sound better when it gets older? I can't say that I notice any difference in my guitar's sound, but maybe that's because it's just an Ibanez...Just curious.

Yes, SOLID WOOD guitars get better with age. But this can be debated. Howver, if your guitar is laminated it will sound the same or get worse over a long course of time.

Guitars made of solid wood age. That is, the wood ages and dries out and becomes harder thus alowing more sound/vibration to escape from the body of the guitar, through the wood. The guitar will become more flexible over time and then be more resonant. People will say there guitar "opened up" if it gets better with aging. Most people say just having a guitar sit in a room for 20 years not being played will NOT make it sound better. A guitar must be played and the vibration helps it age and then it WILL sound better. People have tried to make new guitars out of old wood but find that it does not help the sound at all. Vibration over many years does. That is why you see vintage guitars often more expensive then new ones. But, that opens up another can of worms. Guitar making technology has grown alot over the years and others say that newer guitars are better in sound then a vintage guitar. I will shutup now.

maturation of the wood helps the sound. note it only helps solid wood, not laminate. thats why companies often keep their wood in warehouses until its reached a certain point in maturation.

great information, guys...i am pretty sure that my guitar must be at least partly laminated, partly solid...that's what this site says anyway... http://www.ibanez.com/guitars/guitar.asp?model=AW10NT

i dont actually have an aw10nt, but an aw50...this is the closest guitar to being the same, though

i saw the exact same thing
"Forget about what you are escaping from," he said, quoting an old maxim of Kornblum's. "Reserve your anxiety for what you are escaping to."
