Help the technologically challenged....
Hey,
I just got the 1/4" to 1/8" stereo jack for the back of my comp. I want to record my gee-tar and I cannot get a sound out of it. I am using Cool Edit Pro v 2.0 but can't figure out how to get it to work...how do i set it up? please help me.
I had my mic working fine....where am I supposed to plug the adaptor? - the same as the mic input?
I have no clue what to do.....pleeze help the Cricket...
Thanks,

ok what i do is: i have a standard cord that is made for speakers. it plugs right into the computer. i am guessing this is the 1/8" (either way it is the smaller one). it has the same 1/8" plugs on both ends. ok so i have this cord and on the end not plugged into the computer is where you put the adapter. then plug the adapter into your guitar. make sure your pickup is on and turned up enough.
that should work.
that should work.

Hmmm..i tried that....not sure where I am supposed to plug into the comp...is it the jack for the microphone? or should I use a line in? I tired both and cannot produce anything. The patch chord works and my pickup works fine cuz it works on my amp....grock wrote:ok what i do is: i have a standard cord that is made for speakers. it plugs right into the computer. i am guessing this is the 1/8" (either way it is the smaller one). it has the same 1/8" plugs on both ends. ok so i have this cord and on the end not plugged into the computer is where you put the adapter. then plug the adapter into your guitar. make sure your pickup is on and turned up enough.

Where would I check to see about the +20dB settings?
Thnks for the help.
On my computer I double-click the speaker in the task bar, and go to the recording settings (Options ---> Properties) and make sure in the Options menu "Advanced Settings" is checked. Then there should be an "Advanced" button underneath the mic volume control that lets you add 20dB gain.

when you try this stuff, does the mic still work. i mean like if you just switch and plug that back in does the mic still work right away. and try opening up just the standard sound recorder under the Programs~>Accessories menu (it may be under multimedia). then try and record in that program. also try to record in that program with just the mic. this is starting to really puzzle me. i'll think about it some more if i get bored.

Assuming you have Windows 95+, you should go to the volume control under the accessories tab of the start menu. Once there, click on file and select properties. Under properties, select the recording button under "adjust volume for". Make sure that in the window beneath that button, that Line In is checked, then click OK. A different window should pop up which says recording control. Again, make sure that Line In is selected, and adjust the volume and balance to your liking. After that, obviously plug your adapter into the Line In on your computer. Thats how it works for me, but I don't use cool edit pro so I couldnt help ya there. I use Cakewalk Pro Audio 9, and its really easy to set up after you have done what I said above. Hope that helps.

I plug the mic in the mic jack and it works just fine. I take the mic out and touch nothing else and the guitar doesn't work. It won't work in sound recorder either.
Couls it be a shitty adaptor? What is the exact kind I should have? I have a 1/8" to 1/4" stereo to mono adaptor.....
could it be settings in cool edit? i dunno anymore....

No it's not, that's an 1/8" to 1/8". You *should* be able to pick up your guitar when plugged into the mic jack (line-in won't work unless you have a preamp hooked in or are running through a mixer). Make sure you're in the mic jack and, as others have said, it's not muted and you have the 20dB boost on. (open up volume control ... options --> advanced controls ... click properties under microphone, check microphone gain)cave_cricket wrote:This is the adapter that I am using...is it what I should have?
