As far as "setup," that isn't really rocket science if you already know how to setup and tweak a fretted bass. Generally you will set it up for much lower action since fret buzz isn't a factor, and the "buzz" you'd get from having the strings set close to the board gives you that fretless "mwah," although higher action will give you more of an upright sound . . .
I do agree you shouldn't spend much on a fretless until you get to know them. A standard Fender Jazz should be just fine to get you started on fretless, then after a few months you can decide if you want to either upgrade the parts on the Fender or step up to something a little higher up the food chain.
new bass?

Anyhoo, I have a Warwick Corvette (RockBass line) in the 5-string format, and it's quite good for the price IMO. I paid about $450 for it back in Nov 2002 when they were still somewhat 'new.' The trademark Warwick growl is there, but it's much subdued compared to a real Corvette. Try them side-by-side to hear that difference. I've played mine a ton and it feels great, and even though I do have small hands, it feels very comfortable. If yer going fretted, I'd recommend the 'Vette.
BTW, the blue stain finish is quite nice on the Warwick, though I'd much rather have a natural finish like most of their basses.

I wouldn't buy a USA Fender Jazz or P-bass as long as the Lakland Skyline series exists (unless you can get a really good deal on the Fender). MIA Fender and Lakland Skyline are both mass produced instruments, but the craftsmanship and quality of the Lakland is so superior to Fender, for just $100 or so more, that Fender should be embarrased. I did run across an MIA Fender Jazz in a shop a while back, new but on the wall for a year, priced at just under $700 that I considered, but I wouldn't pay full price as long as Lakland is out there.Macht wrote:fender sucks my nuts
I would consider the standard (Mexico) Fender Jazz fretless though-- it doesn't seem like a bad deal, and it seems to be pretty much on par for its price point.

Yes, but cost is a factor-- I think the Mexico Fenders are ok for the money, for basses in that general range. The Lakland Skyline Jazz and Precision models are *about* the same as USA Fenders, the Modulus VJ (Jazz bass) is probably close to $2000 these days, Sadowsky and USA Laklands are quite a bit higher new.i like tictacs wrote:There are much better fender-style basses available then the fender itself. Modulus, Lakland, Sadowsky, etc come to mind
Sadowsky owners swear by them, and I've never played one, but personally, given the quality of the Lakland Skyline, I'd rather have 3 of them instead of one Sadowsky . . I can't imagine spending that much on a bass, and I'm pretty sure the Flea will be the most expensive bass I ever own.
