I didn't read all this.. but I can't believe someone put Clapton.. he's my 2nd favorite guitarist. I love his blues guitar, it's great. I'm not in to the van halen and yingwie malsteam (sp) stuff.. so anything like that gets my vote..

Saying Clapton is overrated is a joke. He may not have amazing technical ability, but he has an original style and he's successfully blended elements of blues and a little rock. He's done all kinds of music, and he's been around for around 4 decades.

Im really suprised more poeple havent said Santana, nothing he does impresses me except black magic woman

And the last 4 years he has just soloed over other people's songs, woooooo

He sold lot of records recently because of a gimmicky approach to writing an album, having others do it

He co-wrote almost all of the songs on his last two cd's including Love of My Life with Dave. They're not really just other people's songs.

Thank God someone else does. I swear every song he does sounds exactly the same. He annoys the living crap out of me. You wanna hear melody, listen to David Gilmour's solos. They're unforgettable. And I think there's no way Tim Reynolds is overrated because outside of small circles, no one knows about him.

And NJPearce, Jimi Thing is not about Hendrix, just so you know.
The actual riff of Jimi thing is exactly that, a tribute to Hendrix. The lyrics themselves are about the positive effects of drugs, but the actual song was called jimi thing because it was a hendrix-esque riff.
The guitar riff wasnt written by dave to sound like or be a tribute to Jimi at all, it was just a coincidence. It didnt have a name and Carter wanted Dave to play it one day and said, "Hey dave, play that jimi thing" because he thought it sounded like a hendrix song. As for what the lyrics are about, Ive heard a few differnet explanations from Dave in recordings I have.
IF its called Jimi Thing because it sounds (or CArter thought it sounded) like a Hendrix riff, then couldnt you consider the riff a tribute to Hendrix? I wasnt saying Dave wrote to honor Hendrix, but in that it was a riff that sounded like Hendrix and was called Jimi Thing, isnt that some sort of a tribute?

Aren't the lyrics about jackin' off? Really, take a minute and reflect on what he's saying.

i am new to the boards so no one may respect my opinion, but i comepletely agree that cobain is overrated and i think that Nirvana is overrated in general. Also i am surprised that no one has said anything about aerosmith an joe perry because imo they are one of the most overrated bands of all time.

Alright,

Kurt Cobain was a god-awful guitar player, got it? Hes majorly overrated just like Adam Jones (Tool), etc.

Yngwie created a new standard for guitar, that neo-classical style is amazing, but yea, it can get old after awhile.

Hendrix was a guitar player...yup...a guitar player, everyone was so high and it was so "out-there" that everyone thinks hes the greatest ever, I hate to tell you this but there were many guitarists around at the time that outranked Hendrix in every aspect other than stage presence. Lighting a guitar on fire or playing with your teeth doesn't mean jack. I played with my teeth once on stage, whooooo whatever.
Frank Zappa was around in the 70's, and was far beyond Hendrix as a player, not to mention as a songwriter. Hendrix was just another product of drug crazed/based rock out of the 70's, like the Grateful Dead (Jerry Garcia, also overrated).

Thats my say.

creativity is probably the most important quality to a good guitarist. It's one thing to be able to play a hendrix song, and another to write. He was amazing...cobain should get the same type of respect for how he impacted music...maybe not as a guitarist so much as a musician, but he deserves credit....calling jimi hendrix overrated is a disgrace to music
