wow thanks a lot. i'm very self conscious of my voice. i wish i could perform in public, i dont think i'm good enough.
check out my other yorn cover though.

yeah i know what you mean...i'm playing at a party tonight for friends....it's not easy to play in front of people at the beginning... but the one thing you really gotta try and do, is block out your surroundings and focus solely on the sound of the music...the first couple times, the adrenaline is overwhelming and can make it difficult to concentrate if you have peformance anxiety...it's normal obviously, you just gotta learn to channel it though... playing open mic nights at pubs or coffee houses is a good way to practice...cuz people aren't as critical about performance and so you have a better chance to hone your performance skills... and don't be self conscious of your voice, be confident x10... any hint of 'doubt' while performing can take away from the song...plus i think we've determined that you have a really good voice...and this is a 'public' forum

i have yet to do any sort of open mic or any public performance. i don't even sing/play songs in front of my best friends when they ask. i need ways to get over this! help

I have the same problem. I know it probably won't help much to say it but you do have a great voice with greater potential so don't give up. If the people you play for are anything like the folks around here you'll have nothing to worry about. I personally like to here people enoying playing music no matter how good they are...unless they really suck

. Anyway I hope you have a better time breaking through your perfomance anxiety than I do. Most people don't know what it's like to not even be able to perform for your friends, it SUCKS!

Oh, this I know. It REALLY sucks. My friends are like, "Whit, play a song." So, I pick up my guitar and play a song. This doesn't please them. "Whit, SING and play a song." Then I'm all like, "Noooo...

" It's horrible! I get all shy because I'm afraid they're going to be like, "Oh..that was...........good...." when they really thought it sucked, but couldn't say that because they're my best friends.

Confused?

Not at all. You basically decsribed how I am to a T. I can play all I want but when I'm asked to sing there's no way.
Maybe it's the drama queen in me.
Keep posting because I among others enjoyed it very much and not in an "oh, that was......good" sorta way.

Disregard anything I say in political threads, I get worked up.
But thanks for the confidence boosting, you might not think so but it helps!

I definitely plan on posting more stuff, I'm working on BOWA right now and just finished Ants Marching, but I'm not sure if it's up to my standards

Don't worry about it. nDMB brings out the asshole in all of us particularly me. I hope you can tell than I'm a sincere and helpful person when I'm not waving my fist. Helping other people with music and learning are the only reason I'm here...I just get lost sometimes.
I'm looking forward to hearing the new recordings. Btw do you ever use a capo when your covering songs that were sung by guys (Jeff Buckley is an exception) ? It might help get you into a more comfortable range. Just a thought.

Whit, I enjoyed both of your recent Yorn covers. I thought you did a great job with both of them. I don't see any reason to be shy about singing in front of people (easier said than done I know). Where did you get your Pete Yorn tabs?

I don't really use a capo that much, maybe I should give that a go! Thanks for the advice. I've got some covers up and coming..keep your eye out
