Unread post by Krems22 » Thu Jul 15, 2004 6:31 pm

Im basically a beginner and this is hard for me to explain. for the intros to both i have been using only my 1 and 2 fingers, but on the vid all 4 are used..it seems much easier to use 1 and 2. anybody else do this, or am i going about this completely wrong. thanks

When you get control of your pinky it makes things a whole lot easier

you can play it with only two fingers if you want, but its not gonna sound as clean and crisp, since you have to slide so far inbetween notes... learn it the way on the site, it will build your finger strength and you will be able to play a lot more dave songs... i would recommend learning the nature intro if you wanna get down the proper hand motion

Trust me on this as I just went through it.

Play it the right way and play it often and your pinky will start behaving itself within a month.

I promise :)

If you don't learn to use your pinky as soon as possible, it'll definitely give you problems further down the road.

I never used my pinky when I started. Then after a while, I tinkered with it, and when it became string and useful, it really does make things and stretches easier.

um, i'm trying to raise my post count.
like everyone else said, the pinky finger is one of the main keys to playing dave's shit. think about it, dave is a professional guitar player and if you think he's playing tripping billies and too much etc. with his 1st and 2nd fingers and doesn't have any control of his other fingers then your crazy or too hopeful. to play dmb you have to learn/know how to use all your fingers.....on both hands!

haha i remember thinking, there's no way my pinky will ever join the team...for the life of me, i couldn't get the damn thing to go even close to where i wanted...but it's funny what time and practice can do

Yeah, man, its true. If you build up your pinky, which I know sounds pretty impossible, it makes a lot of songs SO much easier. Keep at it.

I have excellent control with my pinky. I just cant do billies that way, I just use my index and middle. I've played it so many times that way that I think it would be hard for me to stop. It sounds perfect though.

Tripping Billies is so tough to try and play exactly like Dave... i think Pat (dmbguitar) has it down pretty good, in looking at his video... the pinky is definitely the toughest finger to gain control of though

It's defintiely the toughest finger to get to work for you. Along with general "Dave" practice, finger exercises that use the pinky up the neck can help a lot to.
