First of all, yer kinda gay for being interested in this thread...

Second, you may wonder why I am making such a strange outburst. Well, I changed my guitar strings for the first time in a long time...It's so wierd how you forget what new strings sound like...Anyway, I tried the D'Addario EJ16 Lights for the first time, and WOWIE...I really can tell the difference from the Martins I used to use so much...I always play Crash to test the quality of strings, and I released in my shorts... I bought these after seeing so many threads about great strings...So I must also become another one to recommend these fine threads... :D

How do you know when to change your strings? And how hard is it?

you should change strings every 2 months. its not that its hard, its just that its time consuming and annoying. especially when you have a 12 string. anyway, to restring (peg bridge):
1) loosen the string
2) cut the string
3) use a winder (very convenient) or something else to pop up the peg and remove the string
4) take the other part of the string out of the tuning nut
5) place the new string in the hole (with the little knob down) and place the peg in correctly, then hold the peg down and pull the string up.
6) keep holding the peg down and place the string through the proper tuning nut. then make sure its in the right spot on the bolt or whatever its called lol.
7) the peg will stay loose until its tuned properly, so dont worry about that. just make sure youre holding the peg down until its firmly in.
like i said, not that hard. just time consuming.

You might need to change your strings more than every two months. I like to change mine at the latest once every two weeks, unless I'm running some coated strings and they're holding up really well. I'd like to be able to change them once a week.

wow, once per week! I guess it depends how much you play too right?

how much you play and also the air and skin oils destroy the strings. You can see the difference in the strings as well as hear the difference.

The coated you can get by w/o changing your strings as often

strings can degrade from dirt, so washing your hands be for you play can increase the longevity of the stings. I've heard some cats say they can wash their old strings to get them to play like new again. Of course i don't recommend nor would I ever try that.

Yo, Snoop! Depending on how long you've been playing, you'll be surprised how much better your guitar will sound with a new set of strings. The brightness of a new set always motivates me to play

i go a month with the Elixirs (and i have yet to break an elixir string (knock on wood)) that's with an average of 2 hours of playing per day. and there is a difference when i change strings but not enough to make it worth changing any more often. i wash my hands before playing about half of the time so that helps.

I break quite a few strings, but not while playing. I break when I'm going through alternate tunings.

All this talk of new stings made me go buy a few sets. Put D'Addario EJ16 on my Sigma and will soon be putting on D'Addario EXP16 on my Hd-28V. (Never used the EXP16's so I am looking forward to my first coated string experience) I got home and realized I overpaid for the EXP's so I will be sure not to make that mistake again.
