Buckley. Voice and good looks always seemed to overshadow his guitar skills.

Tommy Emmanuel

The guy is amazing ... granted if you're not into Chet Atkins-esque music then you might pass him by but jeezus the guy can shred an acoustic.

Tommy Emmanuel is really know best for playing bass lines and melodies at the same time, but for a finger picker, he can really shred. He can write music really well also, check out some stuff from his album "Only".

I think Mayer is a bit overrated. I saw a guitar one magazine with him on the cover exclaiming, "the next guitar heroes"
I'm not knocking his skill or anything, but honestly I think there are so many people around that can blow Mayer away that he shouldn't be placed on a pedestal. I guess he's just a very visible artist that can play guitar well so everyone just says he's one of the best because everyone knows who he is.
I'm gonna say something about David Gilmour because he is in my opinion one of the best guitarists ever, period. The man's ability to write lead that was as important and memorable in a song as the lyrics is just incredible. I think he gets a good deal of attention, but oh well.

Just watch his Any Given Thursday DVD and you'll be amazed! Oh yea...Mayer is playing a concert on the WB Thursday at 8 I do believe. Could be wrong about the time, but watch it if you think he's crap! You'll see how genious he is on guitar!

Oh, and one not looked at by most is Mark Knouphfler. He is from Dire Straits.
Mark Knouphfler is fuckin amazing, his solos are so melodic and expressive, IMO he's one of the best guitarists out there, and he fingerpicks all of his songs too. THe outro solo to Sultans of Swing and Tunnel of Love are amazing, check them out.
