Warehouse Question ?

So you're amazed as to how Dave's rhythm guitar slaps and strums so "perfectly"...but you can't. Ask all things about Dave and his guitars here.

Warehouse Question ?

Unread post by DSeibel » Thu Jul 08, 2004 8:29 am

Guys

I am a little confused about Warehouse. I play it like it shows in the Tabs, for example the first chord is low E string fretted at the 7th, deaden next 4 strings and play the high E open. I try to do this and it sounds nothing like the video. Maybe I just need muting practice. It also seems to be very difficult to deaden the ADGB strings and leave the high E open...I just get alot of buzzing. Any words of wisdom ?

Also, I thing I have discovered the best fretting hand excersice of all...learning how to play crash !!

I don't play the high e string at all....I think if it was ment to be played there would be an "0" on the string in the tab.

Don't be so hard on yourself...the important thing is that you knew it didn't sound right.

Warehouse kicks my ass more than any other song because it's purely a muting exercise ... It's not stretching (like Satellite) ...

I really think that it's a matter of practice til it works ... I think why I have a problem is that I'm still not using the proper technique. I can play it at half speed and it sounds right but at full speed ... not so much :) Keep at it! :)

Ok, one thing about this song. Dave does NOT strum the full guitar when doing the verse. His strum/pick hand actualy moves down and up the strings. Here, when you fret the next string, your strumming focus is on that string. So you always focus on the string you just fretted, and the muting around it should just be done by naturaly placing your fingers (or sometimes how your index lays down across the guitar) so they touch the other strings enough to mute them. Kind of like the Stone, you strum/pick (well, in warehouse you just strum, and a quick down up down up strum thing) while muting the strings around it naturaly by how your fingers are placed.

So, the trick to muting is very simple, you just mute the strings around the string you just fretted. Well, you don't mute the strings you have fretted at the time.

Here, I just did this to clear anything up:

Code: Select all

e----------------------------
B----------------------------
G------------7---------------
D--------11----9-------------
A-----9---------10-9--7------
E--7-------------------------

on the 7-9-11 fretting, you keep your fingers down on the guitar. Once you do the 11, you immediately lift those fingers while immedately fretting the second 7. Now, for fretting the 7-9-10, you do it the same style as the 7-9-11. When you start strumming the 10, you lift your other fingers, but leave them rested in the same area so they mute the few strings you will hit. Now, you do the down riff of 10-9-7 with the muting of both your fingers you just lifted and are fretting with, and the natural muting of your fretting fingers touching the strings around it.

Now, for fast up down strumming, you have to just listen and get it down.

I hope this helped.

Well put RT! I think thats why a lot of people have troubles with this song is because they focus too much on the muting instead of focusing on the notes and letting your fingers naturally mute the strings. 8)

Actually it cleared up what I was trying to do! I mean I kinda had it, but now I do have it. I just need some thinner picks to pull it off easier! My green tortex's aint cutting it! :?

It's a bad link now. Angelfire won't host it. Any chance of getting this audio re-posted?
