Most UNDERRATED guitarist
Hey everyone. I just figured that since we have a thread for OVERRATED guitarists, we should start one for those guitarists who are amazing but for some reason receive no recognition for their stuff. I'll start things off by saying that, in my opinion, the most under appreciated guitarist is Nick Drake. I hope most of you have heard of him and if not I strongly urge you to check his stuff out.

Both excellent calls of guitarists that are underrated! I saw Keller with Dave at Blossom on 6/29 and it was just Keller and 5 guitars up there and the things he did, totally mindblowing. And Kaki...well its Kaki and her style and ability is amazing, with her speed and harmonics and how it all fits together perfectly, just awesome.dmbguitar718 wrote:Kaki King
Keller Williams
I agree with Nick Drake, too.

So I don't think he really counts as an underated gutiar player as much as he counts as an underrated artist. And he definitely counts as one of my favorites.

I'm not. He's undoubtedly a good guitarist, but I don't think he's really great, Kinda like Dave. He can write a great song, and knows his theory, but he can't really compare to guys like SRV, and Clapton. Besides, he doesn't just use one guitar, he uses quite a few guitars, a loop machine, drums, a bass, his mouth, and all that other stuff that you see on stage at his shows. Like I said, he uses just your average everyday chords and adds funky picking patterns and hammer on's (i.e. Its a plant, its just F and Gm, Best Feeling is just G#m, B, F#, and E, and Freeker by the Speaker isn't as hard as songs like R&R, the Stone, and SMTS) So Keller is definitely underrated, underapreciated, underpublicized, just not as a guitarist so much as an artist IMHO.dmbguitar718 wrote:Plllleeeeeeeeaaaasssee tell me you're joking.jeffro wrote:I think Keller is great, but all he really does is funky picking patterns and hammer-ons. I know he's popular and all, but people don't look past his poppy stuff usually! That man can play! He is a technical genious that uses his own style of thumb fretting! If i had long thumbs like him, I'd be happy. Some of his songs are very technical and require some crazy chords that my hand can't get into. It seems that everyone just sees him as the guy who sang Your Body is a Wonderland. That song's horrible. You have too look past that and listen to something like Covered in Rain from his DVD!

OK. First of all, there is no way you can compare Keller to Dave.jeffro wrote:I'm not. He's undoubtedly a good guitarist, but I don't think he's really great, Kinda like Dave. Two...
"Like I said, he uses just your average everyday chords and adds funky picking patterns and hammer on's"
...Couldn't be farther from the truth. If you have iTunes, go on and sample Brunette (which there is no way in hell Dave could play), Bounty Hunter, and Not of This Earth. (And that's just three...)
And just because some of his songs aren't as hard to play as R&R, The Stone, etc, does that make him a better guitarist? I would say some of the stuff I have written is harder to play the some of Dave's stuff. Does that make me a better guitarist?
So, anyway, go listen to those songs, and then edit your post.
